Premiere Pro Multiple video format issue

I have a problem that I was not able to resolve watching any of the videos dealing with Adobe Premiere Pro. I have footage of a multi-camera shoot mistakenly shot in two different formats. The first camera shot in HD 1440X1080 the second camera was shot in 720X480 16:9 letterboxed. I think the issue may be resolved by taking the HD footage and modifying it using the interpret footage option then letterboxing it. But I don’t know what modifying the clip actually does and when i put the footage on the timeline it goes back to 1440X720. I could really use some help optimizing this process as well as letterboxing the modified footage.

Create a sequence that matches your sd material.
Drop the hd material in that sequence and scale as needed.

Hi James,

Can you please clarify – is the SD footage truly letterboxed; in other words, is it a 4:3 recording, with black bars permanently in the image? Or is it a 16:9 recording, with black bars just being added on playback?

And what did you want to shoot as – both 1440×1080? Do you NEED to edit as SD or HD (going to DVD or Blu-ray)?

I believe the setting were set so that it was 16:9 with letterboxing because the letterboxing transfered over when I digitized the tape on an entirely different camera. I am working in SD because the format I’m exporting to is youtube.

Hi James,

Please tell us the make/model/format of the camera giving you the issues. Hard to help when we don’t know the situation. Hopefully, you have access to the original camera and tape.

It’s possible the camera DID record 16:9 video, but the letterboxing was adding during output, since you say you dubbed to another camera. Most cameras are NOT going to actually record a letterboxed clip.

Hey Jeff,
thanks for assistance so far, also I checked out Safe Harbor Computers, very cool and informative to me as I’m just starting to think about upgrading my system. I texted the info to camera’s owner: we shot sd tape on a panasonic dvx 200 probably 720 X 486 or 640 she’s not sure on that detail, but I do have access to it when I come around to collect footage for the last show we shot together. Let me know if that’s what you needed.
