  • Premiere Pro latest build not working with BMD UltraStudio for UHD

Recently I have encountered an issue when playing back any source file that is 3840 X 2160 29.97 Pro Res out to Black Magic Designs UltraStudio 4K.

While trying to play the file in a source monitor or on a timeline it glitches badly. Flickering green to normal, a few frames forward, a few frames backward all quite jarring and extreme. Render the UHD timeline and it is no issue at all.
Playing the same raw file in BMD Media Express shows no issues.
No issues in Resolve. It appears that it is how Premiere is sending to BMD via Mercury Transmit. I can completely reproduce it at any time.

iMac Pro with 64GB ram, 1200MB sec R/W speeds, so not a performance issue.

Premiere 14.0.1 with latest utils for BMD. BMD support pointed out that it is Adobe having an issue sending data to the BMD since the BMD works fine with non Adobe playback. Anyone else seeing this or encountering similar?

Maybe not related, but years ago with our US4K it took a few hundred tries with old and new versions of DesktopVideo.
Express would be fine but other apps (Avid, FCPX, Premiere) would not play nice.
This was on a nMP D700 w64GB RAM.

I had the exact same issue on a test lab machine about two months ago. Running PPRO 2020 14.0 on MacOS, with a standard mini monitor device (so HD output). Tried both the latest as well as a previous driver for the Desktop Video install from BMD, both gave the same results. Also no troubles using Resolve.

It was the main reason for me to not upgrade to CC 2020 for the coming half year or so. Glad I did not update the rest of our facility. We really can not do without proper output monitoring.

I’m sorry to say this, but I think it is a bug or mismatch between the BMD drivers and the 2020 version of Premiere.

We just went through a mess after updating to Catalina on a MacPro (Late 2013) and our US4K. Finally, an Apple update dropped (either yesterday or today) and updated Catalina. Now we can at least use our US4K. Not sure it will help you with your issue, but it’s possible. Our problem was just getting the Desktop Video app to see the hardware.

Found the issue but cant fix it. The issue is with how Premiere handles Arri Alexa Pro Res files. I dont have the issue with other media or once it has been rendered to ProRes HQ.
I have just confirmed that Adobe Premiere 2020 14.0.1 Does NOT work with Black Magic Designs produicts when working from Arri Alexa Pro Res Files. I tried other BMD devices and am getting the same results.
Premiere 2019 does work. Something was broken in the transition to 2020 in regards to Arri Pro Res.

    BMD 11.4.1.

    Mojave 10.14.6

Were you by chance using Arri Alexa Pro Res footage? I have narrowed it down to that.

We are using a mixture of ProRes 422 from an Arri Amira and lots of H.264 from GoPro or DJI. I did not narrow it down to when or on which footage the glitches occurred. But your thesis is definitely possible since we are both using stuff from an Arri ProRes recorder.

Blackmagic just dropped an update that seems to include a fix for this. I no longer have a testlab with CC 2020. So can anyone confirm the new desktop video app makes any changes?
