Premiere Pro Laptop
Posted by Bill Mccallum on September 7, 2005 at 11:40 pmI searching for a good laptop for editing and not gaming.
Where do I go to compare Centrino, Pentium M and Pentium 4. Which is best for editing Premiere Pro 1.5 on a 2500.00 budget.James Taylor replied 20 years, 8 months ago 10 Members · 9 Replies -

September 8, 2005 at 1:37 amI edit on an HP Pavilion ZD8000. It has a P4 3.0(not a mobile chip), 1 gig of ram and a 100gb hard drive.
I use firewire drives for media and it’s a real workhorse. -

September 8, 2005 at 1:45 amFor $2500, you can get an excellent editing system. If you search for posts in this forum, you can see my results that I posted a little while ago.

September 8, 2005 at 3:44 amI agree with the other posters here. The centrino’s are fine for power savings, but the “desktop” chipsets will perform better. Absolutley no celerons!!!
Things to look for…
800Mhz front side bus
5400 rpm hard drive (4200 will work though)
DVD Burner
at least 512 meg memory
Dedicated Graphics memory – No Shared Video Memory
That’s all that comes to mind right now.

September 9, 2005 at 5:00 pmWhat a timely thread. Thanks. I too need to buy a laptop asap, and since I also need to upgrade my desktop unit, money is a big issue for the laptop side.
I’m a bit confused by the various responses, recommending a variety of makes, models, and processors. I need laptop SD PPro editing now, HDV laptop editing soon. I don’t like to pinch pennies and wind up dissatisfied, but if I can pinch hundreds of dollars by buying a yesteryear model I would be interested. What do you feel is the absolute best value, in the category of laptops that are slightly behind the curve technically, and therefore might be a bit cheaper than the hottest new models?
Thanks again.

September 9, 2005 at 9:04 pmI have a 2.0ghz Centrino (Pentium-M) with 1gb RAM, 60gb 7200rpm system drive, 128mb ATI graphics, 1680×1050 15.4″ widescreen… I use Maxtor 250gb external drives for editing and an ADS Tech PYRO AV Link for SD real-time previews to an external TV monitor.

September 10, 2005 at 7:52 pmHello Brian,
I have almost the same setup (but only 12 inch screen and 32mb graphics). How are you using your external drives? Are they just for storing clips, or do you use them as scratch disks as well? Are they firewire or usb 2? I
