  • Premiere Pro Interface Lag (2018 and 2019)

Posted by Nick Spiropoulos on March 19, 2019 at 1:24 pm

this is a crosspost from the official Adobe forum site. I’m desperate????…

So far this issue only appears to be happening when working with existing project files made by two of my nine in-house Mac edit suites, editors Ben (Edit 8) and Andrew (Edit 1), I’m naming them just so you can keep track of which stations I’m referring to. Both culprit stations are top spec iMac Pros with ATTO thunderlinks

connecting to the same SAN storage as all other stations. Premiere Pro, both 2018 and 2019, is having lag issues when interacting with all areas of the interface. Any area I click or attempt a keystroke is problematic. Almost every attempt at clicking or typing induces a delay and or pin-wheel. Initially, the issue occurs every couple of seconds with a pinwheel length of 1-3 seconds. Over an hour or two, the delay/pinwheel length grows and grows up to about 6 seconds, while still happening on almost every interactive or every other interaction. The only temporary fix is to import the most important aspect of a project, the main edit timeline, into a freshly made project file, losing all of my media and bins not already used in that timeline. Any other attempt at importing more than one timeline or unused media doesn’t make the temporary fix. This fix is only temporary because the interface lag creeps back, requiring another fresh project import of the timeline. Many times when I close any of the problem projects, a small popup window with a title of ‘Run Script Error’ is shown with body text of ‘Uncaught exception’ and an okay button. The lag issue is happening on a second workstation, user Jacy in Edit 7 (iMac Pro, top spec, with the exact same configuration as the iMac Pros that originally created the project files that lag) but the original workstation that created the project files do not experience the lag. Deleting everything (media, generated items, and timelines) from all open projects fixes the issue so the software no longer lags.

The timelines play fine for me in Edit 4 (Nick), they just take a few seconds the start and after hitting the spacebar can take up to 6 seconds to stop. After Effects, Finder, and all other software are having no issues so I don’t believe the issue to be our storage I/O or throughput.

    • Processor: Intel Xeon E5 12-Core at 2.7 GHz
    • Installed memory: 128 GB
    • System type: MacPro 6,1
    • Graphics Card: AMD FirePro D700 6GB

    HARD DRIVE INFO

    • 1 TB Factory Flash
    • ATTO Thunderlink fiber channel to 300TB Quantum xSAN, StorNext 6.x.x

    PROJECT INFO

    • Premiere Version: Premiere Pro CC (2018) 12.1.2 and (2019) 13.0.3
    • Footage: Sony MXF OP1 (4k), REDcode 8:1 (4k – 8k), MP4s from stock sites, MOV (photo-jpeg) (HD-UHD), ProRes LT through 4444, WAVs at 44.1 and 48kHz
    • TRT of the timelines: Various lengths from 1 min to 26 min
    • All media is on the SAN
    • Current project file size: Various projects from under 1MB up to 40MB

    FAILED FIX ATTEMPTS

    • Switched from GPU playback to CPU
    • Exporting ‘selection as project’ (selected the main edit timeline)
    • Deactivating Mercury Transmit all together
    • Switched RAM from Performance to Memory
    • Held Option and Shift to clear cache and preferences
    • Cleared the media cache folders using the Clean button in Media Preferences. Also went to the cache folders and deleted them manually.
    • Cleared Sync data from Adobe website and re-sync’d settings
    • Deleted all adobe ID sync settings and recreated from scratch
    • limited interface to a single main 4k screen (5K LG sold by Apple) while trying all default workspaces
    • Created blank new project and imported only the main edit timeline (only works temporarily for a couple of minutes)
    • Importing the entire problem project does not work
    • Lag is greatly reduced but when importing the single timeline but is not completely removed, and it creeps back after a few minutes of use.
    • Uninstalled Premiere and reinstalled

I’m not talking about playback lag or video responsiveness. My issue has to do with interface lag. Clicking on a menu induces a delay. Adjusting a keyframe on any audio-only clip induces a delay. Clicking and dragging a color solid from one bin to another induces a delay. All interface interactivity has the lag delay. Let’s talk about the machines that are not in my suite that are involved: The iMac Pro in Edit 8 is experiencing this same lag issue whereas another iMac Pro in Edit 1 with exactly the same setup; OS, software, plugins, and fiber channel connection to the SAN is not. I do not suspect the media. Last week I was working with 8k REDcode files that take a moment to display, heck our biggest film right now is 10k by 2k and that works fine (though obviously, that film drops frames during playback which is not the issue I’m reporting here). The project files are tiny, under 1.5 MB. Yes deleting everything in the project file does alleviate the problem but that isn’t a workaround, obviously.

I should clarify that the two machines that are experiencing lag are working with projects that started in two specific suites. The projects started in Edit 2 and 7 and these two suites do not experience the lag. Those particular projects are experiencing lag when used in Edit 4 and 8.

Are these “Team Projects”? Or are these single projects working on one edit station at a time?

I do not understand your question. What do you mean by proportions of footage? The problem project file, we’ll call that project file A originated in Edit 1. When I open that project in my suite, Edit 4, I experience interface lag that the Edit 1 suite was not experiencing. It’s the same media, being hosted by the same server, and served in the same way via 10 Gig fiber channel via a Quantum StorNext SAN.

These are traditional, single-user project files being opened and used one at a time on different stations.

This is likely a media issue. Potentially some high res stills, those photo jepgs, or another piece of media that failed to properly “ingest” during the creation of the project file or a sequence.

Also encode those MOV photo/jpegs to pro res.

The problem also sounds like the media cache database and cache location. Where are the machines pointing for that?

I know you said you have already attempted that but keep in mind that “cleaning” the cache will only remove items not currently used in the open project so its best to do with no project open or a test project open.
I have had more success doing it manually and rebooting.

Is the machine still generating .pek files during this “lag”?

Check the video previews location in the project settings too.

You can try to point the previews to the local internal ssd of a problem machine, delete the render files and re-render to prores previews. If this solves the issue then you know its the “render” location.

In your setup you will probably want that pointing to a local drive or the server but NOT one of the other edit machines.

    just an after thought. –
I would recommend that you start or continue looking into an offline workflow for some of your higher resolution deliveries.

After simplifying to a single HD video (ProRes 422 LT at 29.97) and a couple of WAVs, the lag issue remains. All but two computers (7 out of 9 edit suites) have no issues and can handle much more complex and resource intensive projects. My 16 Gb/s fiber connection is identical to all other edit suite workstations and our maintained throughput of 700 – 1,200 MB/s is blazing fast. I used to be able to run much more complex timelines with a variety of codecs and resolutions up to 6k of REDcode (at 1/4 quality of course). All workstations are iMac Pros except for my Mac Pro 6,1. I would understand if my MacPro machine would behave differently from the iMac Pros, expect that one of the iMac Pros is also having this lag issue.

We’re discussing over at the Adobe forums, but I thought I would cross post here to cover my bases: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2605570

    !!! Delete Insta360 !!!

Here’s what I posted on the Adobe forum. Sorry that I forgot to cross-post here. Hope this helps.

Warning: If you’ve ever used Insta360 software, uninstall the extensions from Premiere. There is a known issue with the Insta360 VR video stitching panel extension that makes Premiere go crazy, causing catastrophic interface lag. This is not an issue with Adobe’s Premiere Pro.
