    Hi there,

I’m having problems with Premiere Pro CS 5.5 on a Macpro. It’s extremely slow when moving footage that is already in the timeline.

I’m running Premiere Pro CS5.5 on a Mac Pro:
    12GB RM, 8 cores,
    processor speed 2.4Ghz, intel Xenon
    ATI Radeon HD 5770

The software itself runs stable and other programs such as After Effects or Photoshop as well. Playing back sequences in Premiere works fine (even HD).
But when I try to move a clip in the timeline it takes several seconds for the clip to react. One example would be that I chose a clip and I try to drag to a different video layer and it seems it’s not moving. After a few seconds though the clip moves to the desired spot but sometime when I need to adjust the position it will again take a few seconds until it moves. I’ve tried several footage formats (H.264, ProRes, several Quicktime codecs, XDCam-Codecs).
It’s incredibly painful especially when working with clients sitting next to you.
Does anybody have a clue what might be the issue?

    Thanks so much,

What are you using for Storage?

Some kind of RAID is pretty much a requirement these days.

If you are on 10.6.8 it is a problem. Upgrading your OS to 10.7 fixes this. This was a huge issue for me on 10.6.8 and larger monitors. There were many threads here and on the Adobe Premiere Pro forums about this prior to 10.7.

    I’m still running 10.6.8

CS 5.5 and CS 6 work perfectly fine as expected.

For some people, like you and Tom Daigon, it works ok. For many people they experience what Yannik is experiencing. Let’s see what OS he is using.

It has to do with your monitor setup and other factors. Bigger monitor, more lag.

Actually I had to switch to Lion in order to take advantage of Adobe Transmit / Kona 3 display on an external monitor. I only add this info to let everyone know I am on 10.7.4 now. I did have some issues with the AJA drivers so they have been uninstalled. Life is good (and hot here in Vegas – 112 degrees 🙁

Thank you very much for your replies.

I am indeed running 10.6.8. I will try to fix the problem with an update.

Regarding the storage: if this is any hint at all related with this issue, FCP7 works perfectly fine. Of course this is Mac developed software.

Thank you guys for helping me troubleshoot.

You test this out before upgrading to 10.7 a couple of ways:

    1) by making your screen resolution artificially very low using the displays control panel, it will be blurry and ugly but it mimics a smaller display

    2) or if you have a very large monitor, like a 30″, make the timeline 2/3 the size of the whole screen (at normal high resolution)

The quirk is if the monitor is really small the lag is less. If the timeline is really big, something clicks in and less detail of the clip you’re trying to move is drawn on the screen and this makes dragging faster.

However, it seems Premiere Pro 5.5 works ok in 10.7, though there were reports of the eyedropper not working at some point, though this hasn’t been a problem for me.

I have 24″ single displays through quadro 4000 on both my 10.6.8 systems if that
    helps anyone reading this thread.

Thanks for the information in this thread everybody. I’m on 10.6.8, and if the GUI starts to slow down (particularly dragging clips around in the timeline) I now resize the window. In most cases I can make it about half-size for a minute, then go back to full-size and everything keeps working great!

This doesn’t happen all that often to me, but it’s good to know how to work around it when it does! (I’m perpetually afraid of upgrading the OS….)
