Premiere Pro CS5 – Slow Clunky UI Problem

Hi Shane,

It could be hard to diagnose without looking at the size of your projects or the type of footage you are working with. You haven’t mentioned drives, and that’s often a big reason for slowdowns. A solid 4 drive RAID 5 enclosure is what I would use at a minimum with Premiere nowadays if you are working on a sizable project.

Your CPU may also be on the edge, have you looked at your system performance panel while editing?

RAM and graphics should be just fine for most Premiere tasks.

If could also be worth looking at a small SDD drive to run your OS if you want a snappier interface.

Again, my 2 guesses in order would be drive and CPU.

I am surprised that scrolling the timeline alone would be so heavy on processing. I thought video playback would be that biggest CPU hog. And that runs perfectly fine. But when I use middle mouse wheel or click and drag the scroll bar on the timeline it is about a 1-2 second delay. And I see CPU Usage go up to 3% to 40%. And this is without any video playing.

I am only running crappy preview quality 720p AVI videos that were playblasted from Poser Pro. But this problem doesn’t seem to be related to video size.

It might just be a good idea to revert back to the lightning fast Premiere Pro 7.0 hehe. Actually that is what my colleague uses and it gets the job done.

[WORK-AROUND]
To anyone else who runs into this problem.

The only way I have found to fix Premiere Pro CS5’s ultra slowdown issue is as follows:

1. Create a new Project with the same settings as your current project.
2. Copy & Paste all files and clips from the old project into the new project.

This includes all files in the Project window and all clips in the timeline.

Thankfully when you copy (Ctrl + C) it keeps everything in the clipboard even after closing the old project and opening the new.

After I did this the UI was lighting fast again.
This proves updating to the latest version of CS5 does not solve the problem. It’s a pain in the butt to have to do go through this process every so many saves, but at least it restores your project into a fresh new file.

Adobe, please fix this bug for CS5 users!
