Premiere Pro CS4 – no sound on clips in timeline

Your “Playback Settings” may be set to External Device rather than Desktop Speakers….(at the bottom of the wing menu for the Program Monitor)

I have the same problem. I checked my Playback Settings and they say ‘Desktop Audio’. My camcorder (Sony HRD-SR12) produces ‘mpg’ files. Do I need to convert to another format to get Premiere to play the audio from these files?

Have you upgraded to Premiere Pro CS4.1? If the audio is MP3 that’ll require 4.1. Also seen some rare cases where the audio disappears when the video is stored in a subfolder.

Hi Max,

Yes im using 4.1 and the audio source (in my current project) is captured from the camera straight into ppro.

Also I forgot to mention when i export to a file, it has audio and plays it fine.

Hi guys,

Me again, ok i reinstalled PPro reupdated to 4.1, limited success.

* I now have sound in the left hand source window when playing clips
* I also still have sound if I export to any format
* I also have sound if I play the tiny preview of the sequence in the top left of the screen.
* If I drag the sequence into the left hand source window it will play me everything in the timeline.

However

* I still have no sound when i press play in the right hand window showing the current timeline sequience.

Any good to anyone in solving this?

I’m having this exact same problem. Sound will play in preview and source windows but not in timeline though the little audio bars are definitely going up and down. I’ve tried all versions of CS4 from 4.01 to 4.2.1 with the same results.

I re-installed the OS and installed CS4 again and at first the audio played fine from the timeline but after installing a RAID and reinstalling the capture card(Blackmagic Intensity Pro) the timeline is having issues again. Any ideas? Is it the RAID? The Capture card? The order in which things are installed? Any help is appreciated.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned the version of Quicktime they are using. The latest ain’t always the greatest.

I’m having this problem also! It seems to be something involved with the blackmagic hardware/software. I also have the Intensity Pro, if I go into the device manager and disable the Blackmagic Driver under “Sound, video and game controllers” the audio works fine in Premiere Pro CS4. That totally defeats the propose of having the hardware…but its a start in trouble shooting! Where do we go from here?

I think you nailed it. I uninstalled the Intensity drivers and I can now hear sound from the timeline. Unfortunately now I can’t capture. Guess it’s time to go to Blackmagic Design and see what kind of solution they’ve got. I’ll try to respond back to this thread if I get a solution from them.
