I was going to suggest exactly what Alex offered above. Possibly it is just one corrupted file hanging your project. It has happened to me.

Well thanks for all the suggestions and help. Alas I have just decided to cut my losses and begin reconstructing the project. It isn’t as bad as I thought it would be (most of what I had done was in after effects) just a major pain. I tried all of the suggestions but to no avail. Hopefully this issue is resolved with CS5.

But I did want to thank everyone for taking the time to help a fellow out.

I have had this happen as well…..i have both mac and pc. so when it crashes on my pc, i take the project file over to the mac, where it will open just fine, save it as another name, take that back to the pc, open it, relink media, and it always works. I really love my mac….that thing ahs saved me numerous times. So try that if you have access to a mac with cs4 on it

I am so sorry to hear about your trouble. Pains me, brings back years of old PPro pain really. So how common are major stability issues in the domain of Premiere Pro editing these days. I was thinking of getting PPro CS5 but if this type of instabiltiy is still PPro’s deal then I may not be interested no matter how fast it is, it’s like the tortoise and the hair kinda.

And anybody say if it is better on Mac or PC? Stability and or speed comparisons?
    Thanks!

    Best regards,

    Hellp
are you sure it loads 90% or just yellow line looks like about 90%?
you shoud check importserver\’s CPU usage while loading project. I have noticed that it stops using CPU after a few seconds for some of my project some times. Premiere does not give me any error message. Once it stayed whole night. Nothing happened. I go arround this by opening project on another PC ( all my files are stored on an external network hard disc)
    hope this helps
