premiere pro audio question

Did you wait for the files to fully index? There should have been a green progress bar at the bottom right. Premiere basically converts the audio in more editable format, and you can’t hear it until the progress completes.

I have been using Premiere for several years now using SD dv without problem. I have just bought my first HDV camera and am trying to edit 9hrs of wildlife video down to one hour. Because premiere crashed if I tried to work with one long project I divided it up into 10 minute chunks.

I have now completed each 10 minute project and they all need to be joined together. Importing “sequences” does not allow any manipulation at the join so I have tried to bring each small project into the final composite project by cutting and pasting timeline from small to final composite project. First Paste will work ok but, from then on, sound does not work in pasted timeline. Sound clips still show in the time line but there is no longer any “Wave” showing in the clip ikon on time line and certainly no sound on playback. Clips still show in Project panel and can be played from there. Also notice that sound clips are no longer linked to their video clip. Sound clips can be replaced on timeline by right clicking clip, selecting “reveal in project” and then right clicking again and selectin “replace from bin”. This is really time consuming and after two days I still haven’t managed to relink whole project. Also this inserts audio from begining of original clip and not from the edited point.

I assume this is also part of the memory problem that premiere seems to have but its a real bummer.

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What does that mean? What are you trying to manipulate?

Thanks for taking interest, and sorry for delay in replying. (OAP with similar prolems to Premiere, bits don’t work properly any more.)

The sort of manipulation I was refering to was sound tracks accross the join. One can work around it of course with a bit of planning and by not adding that piece of audio until after putting the sequences together but that is often not as easy if you don’t have the benefit of seeing all the clip junctions.

There just seem to be so many problems when editing with HD that just were not there when using SD. YOu reload a project and most clips are now suddenly offline; subtitles which worked ok in one session suddenly don’t work any more over some .jpg still images but some are ok and all the video is ok; audio that worked ok when you saved and closed the project is presumably offline, (although it doesn’t say so), when you re-open the project; One is constantly reminded that premiere is about to run out of memory and if you add any more clips after that you get the dreaded “Premiere has a problem and needs to close” and you lose everything since the last “save”; on rendering one gets and “error compiling movie” and it stops. Try the render again immediately and you get the same error, wait 30 secs and it works ok again……………and lots more.

Roll on Premiere CS5, I gather people are having plenty of problems with CS4, so that is not the answer.

I note from a more recent thread that there is actually a work around for the video off-line issue. I will go give it a try.

For anyone suffering the same disappearing audio problems, I have found two work arounds which, although a little long winded, do help to recover a project.

1. In the new project make sure that the audio track that contains the missing audio is targeted.
2. Make sure the current time indicator is over the audio clip you wish to recover.
3. Press “m”, this matches the frame and loads the audio into the source monitor. Audio re-appears in timeline.

Note: this only seems to work for clips with associated video. I couldn’t get it to work for background or narative tracks.

So, for the remaining clips:

1. Select the “silent” audio clip and rt click.
2. Select “reveal in project”, the clip is then indicated in its bin.
3. Double click the bin reference which puts the clip in the source monitor.
4. Just click either the “in” or “out” marker and the waveform immediately re-appears.

These work-arounds are a bit long winded if you have a large project to recover, but at least you can recover.

I haven’t yet tested to see whether the audio gets lost again after exiting a project and then opening it again. I will test that after I have made my DVD.
