Hi, I’ve got some footage shot in a shopping centre with people talking to camera with some hum/hiss in the background. I was just wondering what audio filters I should use to get rid of this and what settings I’d need to play with. There is also a high pitched child yelling in the background and was wondering how to lessen this without affecting the person talking to camera too much.

    Thanks

Sounds like a job for Adobe Audition. Noise is easy to get rid of, and the childs voice can possibly be identified in the spectrum view, and therefore selected and deleted.

I have not used audition but I believe I have a current project that it may be very useful.

I am working on a project that is essentially a simulated news report. There are various introductions, interviews, voiceovers, etc. Now that I have the project pieces put together in Premiere I am finding that the audio is all over the place; some scenes use a handheld mic, some use lapel mics, and some use the camera mic. There are hisses, hums, and volume problems to deal with throughout the project.

Does Audition work as a plugin to Premiere, or should I output an uncompressed AVI and work that into Audition separately? Can Audition balance the volume on the project as a whole.

    Thanks in advance.

If you have Premiere Pro 2.0 just right click on the audio in the sequence and select “Edit in Adobe Audition”. The program will replace the AVI audio with a WAV file and open Audition for you.

To get rid of minor hum/hiss, use the DeHummer plugin. However, this will work on only minor hums. If you have a lot of noise, then Adobe Audition should be the tool of choice.
