  • Premiere Pro Audio / Embedded Timecode Syncing Issue

    Hallo

I’ve just imported footage from a Sony FS7 camera into Premiere Pro 2020 and when I play the clips there is a loud feedback-style noise from start to finish, across all of the clips.

Our sound man said it’s the audio time code embedded into the camera and I should be able to rectify in the edit.

When I try to synchronise the video and audio clips, the timecode option is greyed out.

A quick google came up with nothing other than different ways of syncing, which I’m already aware of.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you in advance

What are your audio channels? Are you looking at 1 stereo channel, 2 mono, or a number of mono channels? Can you isolate the one with noise, or is it on all channels? If stereo, can you isolate left/right and still have the noise on both sides?

    Hi,

    Thanks for responding.

When I drop the clip onto the timeline, there is just one audio track. Within that, there seems to be two channels. If I disable either, the boise is still there.

The sound recordist said the ‘interference’ noise is the “audio time code embedded onto each camera. Your editing software should be able to convert that with a few clicks!”

Haven’t come across this before and normally find it very easy to sync separate video/audio files using the synchronise feature.

Any other thoughts? Let me know if screen-grabs will help.

Have just discovered something – when I ‘preview media source channel’ the first two channels have the interference, then channel 3 is absolutely fine, the other channels (up to 8) are silent.

When I uncheck the first 2 channels and keep channel 3 selected, the clip plays silently in the timeline.

If I select ‘3’ in the ‘active channels per clip box, only the first two appear in the timeline track.

Not sure if that’s helpful, but at least I know the audio is there. Just need to find a way to select it.

So do you need to sync this audio with video? Or is it already synced on your FS7 footage? If it’s synced, then you wouldn’t really need to worry about it. If you need to sync up some other video sources, then you may need to create merged clips.

    From Adobe:
Use timecode from an audio master clip to create a merged clip
You can use the timecode from an audio master clip when you create a merged clip. You can also choose to omit the source camera audio when creating a merged clip.

    Do the following:

Select the video clip and the audio clip that contains timecode.
    Choose Clip > Merge Clips.
In the Merge Clips dialog box, do one of the following:
To use timecode from an audio master clip to create a merged clip, select the “Use Audio Timecode from Clip” check box. Then choose the audio track you want to synchronize video with from the pop-up menu.
To delete source camera audio from a clip, sele ct the “Remove Audio from AV Clip” checkbox.
    4. Click OK.
