    Hi all

Putting together some footage in PP and I’ve dynamically linked title composition and ending compositions created in AE.

They are all in 3D space, created entirely in AE using the Cinema 4D engine.

All is fine in AE, and although previews are fairly slow, they are adequate. However, when I bring them into PP, the timeline glitches/stops and generally doesn’t preview properly.

When I come to export, I’m getting render times of 5 hours + for a 4 minute sequence.

The titles are roughly 10 seconds in duration.

iMac (2015) spec is 3.3GHz i5, 24GB RAM, AMD Radeon R9 M290 2048 MB. Not top spec but I think it is acceptable

I realise that the processor is taking a kicking when using 3d
dynamically linked AE files but do these times sound normal to you?

Dynamic linking adds a level of complexity to timelines, and I’ve seen similar issues when exporting with live dynamic links in the timeline. I would suggest either doing a render-and-replace in the timeline in Premiere, or rendering off final VFX files from AE and manually replacing. It generally saves time at the back end.

Your RAM and video card could be better (esp. RAM), so it seems reasonable that you are experiencing slowdowns due to dynamic linking. You can get some more 3rd party RAM, as your model iMac accepts 32GB (and I have heard if you use specific models of RAM it will recognize 64GB)

Thanks for your reply. If I render the AE file, won’t that ‘flatten’ the footage? In which case how would you set up a lower third in this instance that needs to appear as an overlay over the original footage?

Thanks Andy. Yes I can go up to 32GB which is on the shopping list. I think (being an imac) the video card is set in stone unfortunately. Although the current mac is due for replacement in the next 12 months, I’m torn between a iMac pro or top spec i9 iMac.

Yes, it will flatten the dynamically linked AE comp, but that’s the idea. If you need transparency, just render the AE file to a codec with an alpha channel, then it will composite just as it would if you had a dynamic link. ProRes4444, Cineform 12-bit with alpha, DNX with alpha enabled, or Animation are all great options, though Animation will be enormous. Once you know you have the lower thirds locked, it will cut down on your need to render previews in the sequence, too.

That ace, thanks for your suggestion Blaise I’ll give it a try.
