Premiere Pro 5.0.3 Shearing/tearing in preview.
Hi all.
Just upgraded to a new machine for editing and having a minor, but annoying playback problem in Premiere Pro 5.0.3.
Here are my system specs…
Intel i7 950
Asus P6X58D-E
12gb DDR3 Kingston 1600mhz ram
2x Western Digital 6gb/s 750gb 7200rpm drives
Zotac GTX470
Corsair 750w PSUThe problem is that during Premiere Pro preview playback there is some sort of shearing problem. In normal playback it’s fairly erratic and occurs whenever there is movement in the shot. In scrub play with the cursors it appears as a regular scrolling line (a horizontal tear almost).
When the same footage is played back in Media Player or Quicktime etc it’s fine, it’s also fine if it’s rendered out of Premiere Pro. It’s only a problem with the preview playback.
Doesn’t seem to be codec related as I’ve tried previewing quite a lot of different footage rendered in different codecs.
I’ve got the Mercury Engine hardware acceleration enabled and assumed that with the amount of RAM and processing power available Premiere Pro would preview smoothly (everything is great apart from this shearing/tearing problem).
Also tried various settings in the preview window like full or half resolution etc.
Guessing it’s a settings or graphics driver problem perhaps? (tried lots of settings and drivers but the result is the same).
Spent a few hours trying to sort it out now but I’ve made no progress.
Can’t upload a clip unfortunately as rendering the footage removes the glitch 🙂
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

I’d have thought that graphic card drivers should have been the most likely place to look…
Are you seeing this on your edit interface program panel, o4r are you feeding another monitor full screen?

Fixed!
Downloaded and installed every Windows 7 update I could find including the optional ones and the shearing is gone!
Presume it was some sort of communication problem between the OS and graphics card?
Great to have a solution anyway, thanks for the advice Tim.

Got the same config -> same motherboard, same processor, same GFX.
EXACTLY SAME PROBLEM…
Installing updates didn’t solve shearing in preview.Will try to change my GFX or motherboard…

I never had the tearing problem until I reinstalled after a system crash so in my case it must be software or OS related. Downloaded every update and forced vsync, latest flash player, premiere updates etc. Finally I found that turning on a Windows 7 Aero theme rather than “My themes” fixed it, I have no idea why. Hopefully it will for you too.

Thaks a million, been struggling for a few days now, and switching back to Aero solved tearing!!
