Premiere Pro 2014 8.1 choppy playback
Posted by Lewis Stiefel on October 12, 2014 at 3:56 pmLatest update has my GH4 4k footage playing back choppy. There is no rhyme or reason to when
this happens. Sometimes it plays ok…It is really bad whenever I make a speed change. The new changes
are great but are meaningless if I can’t edit without the bad playback. I am editing on a fully loaded
macbook pro retina 2.8 GHz intel core i7 16 GB memory version 10.8.5. Any thoughts to troubleshoot
would be appreciated. ThanksDavid Stack replied 9 years, 10 months ago 7 Members · 10 Replies -

October 12, 2014 at 5:03 pmHi,
Try the following:
- Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
- Update any GPU drivers
- Trash preferences
- Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write
- Delete media cache
- Remove plug-ins
- If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
- Repair permissions
- In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
- Create a new user account with Admin privileges and then launch Premiere Pro from there.
- Disconnect any third party hardware
- Reboot
Report back if anything here worked for you.
Thanks,
Kevin

October 13, 2014 at 3:29 amThanks Kevin for getting back to me. As it turns out my playback issues and plug-in issues
were somewhat resolved by changing my renderer to Software. However now it plays ok for
a few minutes and then the video starts to freeze or the program monitor goes black. I edit
for a few minutes and then reboot ….edit….reboot. This is so frustrating!! How is it that
movies and tv shows are edited on PP and I am having these problems with my 4K video? -

I am assuming that each of these fixes is independent and should be tried, one at a time, in the order you listed them?

What GPU do you have in your MBP? Also, what driver version were/are you using? Is you media on your local driver or external?
Thanks,

October 16, 2014 at 8:28 pmi had to pull my post to its own thread now that i figured out what it was in my case. new thread is called: extreme choppy laggy stuttery sputtery jittery preview playback at 1/4 resolutions and 25% size when multicam editing native .mts https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/3/959718

October 16, 2014 at 8:40 pmWolf I know this sounds crazy and maybe you tried this already but changing the renderer in
project settings to software only seems to have fixed my choppy playback for the most part. -

October 17, 2014 at 1:13 amboth my machines are set to “software only” and both exhibit the issue. i started a thread on the experience but suspect you are editing native .mts and doing some level of color correction on it. perhaps you can share what video effects/plugins you’re using when you saw this lag.

October 1, 2015 at 9:57 pmA bit late to the party, but I found this thread on Google before figuring it out myself so this is for anyone else in the future who might run into this:
My sequence settings were set to editing in 1080i. I switched it to 1080p and it solved all of my issues! Hopefully this helps someone.

June 23, 2016 at 9:27 pmNow I’m VERY late to the party, and as Luke said, “anyone else in the future who might run into this:”
I solved my choppy problem by restarting PP while holding down the shift and alt keys. This seems to clear bugs pretty well, and you know that it worked when it doesn’t show what you opened recently. It’s starting fresh. I also had to re-import some presets that I had, but glad the problem is solved. 🙂
