    It sounds like a firewire briver issue. Try downloading the latest driver version and see if that helps. Also, disable windows from accessing the firewire port for networking (in networking properties page.)

    If that does not help let us know.

    As Scott says, most likely to be a Firewire issue although some antivirus applications performing realtime scanning can cause this – in my case Norton was the culprit.

    It’s possible that another application is grabbing the port for its own use. Make sure there are no video editing applications in your Windows startup folder.

    I did not find any sign of video editing apps in the start up folder I updated the Firewire drivers and updated the drivers for the Soundblaster Audigy card, which has the port that I am connecting the camera to. Also, I did find that I had a 1394 port enabled for networking. So I have disabled that port in the properties page as well as unchecked the options for:
    Client for MS networks
    File and Print sharing
    Internet Protocol TCP/IP

    It still crashes!
