Premiere not detecting or attaching proxies
I have created a bunch of proxies for my project and they won’t playback. Every time i load a clip or drop it into the timeline it seems to just play the original file back. I’ve been searching forums and it seems premiere users have been having the same issue for years!
the whole proxy workflow seems completely useless as far as I can tell- has anyone had similar issues or know a work around?

How do you know its playing the original file and not the attached proxies.

you can verify this by right clicking in project window and enabling metadata view for “attached proxy status” Then you’ll know for sure.

Yep I have done that and it says they are all attached but the proxy is not playing back- only the original 8k file. It’s a bug, lots of other people on forums with the same issue but still can’t find any answers.

pardon me, but did you try toggling the proxy master button in the timeline controls?

Hi so I’ve found the toggle proxy button, thank you! However there is a new problem- the clip plays back smoothly in the source monitor but not in the program monitor. I’m guessing because the sequence is set to the source material settings and playing back the proxy within those settings causes the lag. Is this what would would be happening?

is it lagging with the proxies enabled? if your cpu supports it, see if h.264 acceleration is turned on in preferences. any intraframe proxies should work well. the smaller the resolution, the less cpu overhead. also, you can disable high quality playback, right click on the program monitor. also, lower the playback resolution. cineform, dnx, prores proxies, should work well.
if you are low on hard drive space, you can create a custom h.264 with very low resolution and in advanced preset, enable “1” every keyframe(disables Delta interframes) at 1 mbps. This will make your proxies 400x smaller than normal.
I believe cineform has the lowest cpu overhead, then dnx, then prores. mxf is also really fast. -

I’m editing with a crap machine without a dedicated GPU so I think that’s the main issue. Just created a low res H264 and works absolutely fine if I import the actual proxy file and match the sequence settings to the proxy file itself. As soon as I create a sequence matching the source clip and toggle on the proxies it starts to lag. guess ill just have to edit the proxies in their own native format then manually relink them to the high res clips when it’s all done.
