We could sure use some advice from those of you who have ‘already been there!’

Long story as short as possible:

We’re working on a indigenous language documentation project….we’re all volunteers from the production world who’ve been at this for nearly 2 decades. This summer, we finally got some donations to get a new camera, new computer and new editing software. We had planned to use FCPX, but it JUST DOESN’T WORK (another discussion altogether!) SO…we have now ordered CS5.5 and are awaiting the discs. In the interim, we are plunking around with the TRIAL version and basically like what we see. Been with FCP since v1 and know there’s a learning curve ahead of us…but PREMIERE seems like it will do what we need it to do. Once we retrain our brains.

Beyond being plunged into a brave new world of editing interfaces…to complicate matters even more, we are also now dealing with the brave new world of TAPELESS workflow.

    Here’s our setup:

CAMERA: JVC GY HM100u (10 hours shot so far in .MOV format)

    COMPUTER: MacBookPro 2 GHz Intel Core i7 * GB 1333 MHz DDR3

NLE: Adobe CS5.5 (using trial now – discs ETA sometime after July 4)

    Our Needs:

1- Backup and Archive ALL media files on multiple hard drives

(we think we’ve got this figured out…we’re making disc images of all our SDHC cards with reference names AND we’re dragging and dropping all .mov CLIPS from each card into dedicated MEDIA drives to serve as a secondary backup for archiving as well as a editing (essentially…these drives are out SCRATCH DISKs)

    2- Catalog ALL material

We are COMPLETELY clueless about this. Since we now only have to IMPORT files from our cards (rather than Log and Transfer….HOW do we go about this efficiently within or outside of Premiere? We’ve worn out the google looking for easy answers. That’s why we’re turning to you!

When we view and/or IMPORT our .mov files they have the file management numbers assigned by the camera.

So how can we log what is in each clip? In the old days…we simply made a timecode window dub on VHS (shudder) or DVD (what a pain) and handed it off to volunteers to make a WORD doc of shot notes and dialogue. We then renamed clips and/or sorted selections into BINS to stay organized.

HOW do we make a record of what is on each CARD …AND have it correspond, in a meaningful way, for archiving, logging and editing?

Is metalogging within Premiere the answer? Can we still make a ‘window dub’ on DVD with clip TC for our offsite loggers to input the data we need in WORD or EXCEL? Can those files be imported back into Premiere? Is there a way to link the camera-assigned file numbers to our log info?

We are hoping you can share your BEST PRACTICES with us…we’re running out of time with our last speakers and can’t afford to lose any time.

We appreciate your input and expertise…

the silence is loud – no replies in 6 months.

did you ever figure this out? i’m currently gravitating into Premiere from FCP 7 and trying to figure out my logging workflow.
