A while back, I had to replace my MOBO, which (thanks to Mr. Gates and the gang at Microsoft) required a reinstall of XP and all my software, AE 6.5 and Premiere Pro 7 included. Now, for whatever reason, PP7 misinterprets the pixel aspect ratio of files I import, even on brand new DV footage transferred over from my digital videocam. I pull it in, and it thinks it’s at 1.0 PAR! Pulling the same footage into AE says it’s 0.9 PAR, like I would expect.

Problem is, when I force a proper interpretation in PP7 and render it, something gets lost in translation…the output is of slightly less quality than the original, even though I have PP set to render uncompressed NTSC DV output.

This has existed only since my reinstalls. I’ve searched high an low for info on how to prevent this.

    ANY SUGGESTIONS??

  • It sounds to me like you have an established project setting in PPro initialization that is causing the problem. If you go to new project, then look at custom settings. Under general tab there is a provision for setting this up to 1.0 PAR. By doing so everything defaults to that setting. Change it to .9 and re-import the previous projects you are having trouble with. That should clear it up. If you have done so already and Windows/Premiere is not saving this setting for some reason, you may have a problem with your Win XP install.

Seems like I’ve looked at this before, but I’ll check it out again tonight. Thanks for the advice!

Okay, I started a brand new project, and made sure the General tab’s PAR setting was 0.9 (DV NTSC). When I imported some KNOWN 0.9 PAR output from AE, PP7 interpreted it as 1.0 instead of 0.9. Bummer.

I do have a point of correction on my last post…when I pull in video directly from my video cam it is properly interpreted.

So, it looks like the issue is AE, so I did the following experiment. I generated a short AVI clip from AE using the Microsoft DV codec and the same short clip using NO COMPRESSION (what I usually use). Then, I imported both into PP7. PP7 properly interpreted the Microsoft DV clip, but misinterpreted the uncompressed one. Weird! I’d be happy to use the Microsoft DV codec out of AE, but the images aren’t as crisp, so I don’t like it.

Any more thoughts from anyone out there?

Yeh, it is a AE thingy…I just tested and enabling “Stretch” in the output module settings, Selecting NTSC DV from the drop down menu and then deselecting 3:2 option creates a .09 PAR file that Premiere see fine.

Wow, cool! I’ll give it a try when I get home tonight.
