  • Premiere I’m coming home- but I have a few questions

Posted by Vince Sanchez on December 19, 2013 at 9:08 pm

After 12 years on FCP I’m coming back to where I started. I began on Premiere 4 and used it with a Targa 1000 card with a hotrodded 9GB raid back in the late nineties.
I’ve had Premiere again since CS3 and tried it on evey release since. No go until this week.
Had a multicam project I needed to edit and mix very quickly, did my usual give it a chance and the next thing i knew I was having fun editing. Everything went smoothly and there were a few things that Premiere added to the mix, particularly the lighting plugin. Lead guitar player and drummer weren’t in the main stage lighting, so we lit them and the producer was a happy camper.
Along the way I found that a lot of the things I use often in FCP 7 are there, and one was added while I was editing (clip markers in timeline)
Now that I’m getting into it I’m finding that there are some things I use often that I can’t find or aren’t there.
I’ve scoured all the videos I can find (the one’s on the Cow have been most helpful). and read but I still can’t find answers for these:

    1. Multiple clip blading. Need to split all the clips at a particular point.

    2. Fit to fill, where I can insert a clip and have it adjust speed to fit the hole i”m filling.

    3. Clip audio does not change tracks when I move up or down. If I move a video clip from V! to V2 the audio stays where it is I have to move it manually to V2. Any way to do this?

I’m sure I’ll run into more as I go along but any info on these items would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

[Vince Sanchez] “1. Multiple clip blading. Need to split all the clips at a particular point.”

I’m not sure what was the exact wording but there should be add edit to all tracks command. Option+shift+K maybe?

[Vince Sanchez] “2. Fit to fill, where I can insert a clip and have it adjust speed to fit the hole i”m filling.”

Mark in/out on the timeline and then mark in out in the source monitor. Then do the cut from the source monitor (, to insert and . to overwrite) and Premiere should give you options on how to do the cut (use in, use out, fit to fill).

If Premiere is not giving you options on a 4 point edit (fit to fill)…

check your preferences, I seem to recall this is selectable as a general setting now as opposed to having to choose how to handle it on each occurrence. This was driving a lot of converts crazy, so they added it as a pref.

Tero and Alex Thanks, those tips were just what I needed. Now if I could get the audio and video to move vertically I’d be really happy, for awhile. Ha Ha. Again, thanks

Not sure if this is what you mean but…

You can lasso your clip (make sure audio and video is selected) just hit option up or down. The audio and video moves up or down as long as nothing is colliding. I can’t remember if Premiere CC has this as it’s default setting but you can change it in Keyboard prefs.

    Hope this helps!

BTW- Vince, that is one badass looking avatar.

Also- I made the switch to Premiere CC about 2 months ago. It’s version 7.1 that really nailed it for me. They didn’t have “Add Edit” straightened out until then. Now it’s pretty much FCP 8. The interface is so malleable – I’m loving it.

Thanks Justin, but this isn’t what I’m looking for. What I need is, if I have a clip on V1 and A1, when I move the V1 clip to V2 I want the audio to move to A2. They would move in opposite directions physically but end up on same numbered tracks, this is how I moved clips around on FCP7.
BTW thanks for the compliment on my avatar, should be labeled, that IS my happy face.

    Hi Vince,

Welcome. In general, Premiere Pro is a very smart contextual click program – meaning that, right clicking or using keyboard modifiers will generally get you pretty far…

In this case, once a clip is in the timeline, I don’t know of a way to have the clips move symmetrically. That said there are some options when you place a clip in the timeline…

1 – when you use the mouse from the source view to drag a clip to the timeline, the audio and video will move symmetrically as you outlined.
2 – If you want video on 1 and audio on 2, you can drag to the timeline, hold the shift key down over the video and move the audio. Opposite holds true if you want to move the video and freeze the audio.
3 – If your audio is on track 2+ or if your video/audio is not linked, you can use opt+up/down to move a clip or selection up/down in your timeline vertically.
4 – Of course, it goes without saying that if you’re using the keyboard to do your edits that Premiere Pro will obey your track targeting…

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks Dennis. Very helpful tips.
Relearning Premiere has been fairly painless. As Justin mentions above version 7.1 seemed the the beginning of critical mass for me. 80% of the time I just need a clean workspace that let’s me organize and assemble in a way that works for my given project. Sometimes I very ordered and sometimes very messy, but when I need more depth I want it easily available. Last night I read all the release notes for 7 and it was funny to see how many of my deal breakers have been added during this time.
My plan is to read the manual over the holidays. Any suggestions for a good book on PP?

    Thanks,
