Premiere, HDV and time code weirdness
We have some HD video that we are capturing with our HVR-Z1 camera. The tapes each start with a different hour, so that you can easily see what tape a given clip came from by looking at the hours portion of the time code.
We are using the latest version of Premiere Pro, 1.5.1. The video footage and the Premiere project are both Drop-Frame. We are capturing HDV over firewire. Handles are set to 0, scene detection is turned off.
The first problem is that Premiere sees the hour when logging clips, but not when capturing. So if I log a clip to capture from 2;06;00;02 to 2;07;00;02, when I try to capture the HD video, it just zips to the end of the tape and stops. We have to tell it to capture 0;06;00;02 to 0;07;00;02. The captured video clips have the correct timecode, including the hours.
The second, and larger problem is that it captures video about 40 seconds earlier than logged. So in my example above, when I tell it to capture from 0;06;00;02 – 0;07;00;02, it actually captures from 02;05;21;12 – 02;06;22;09.
Tapes that start with 0 hours log and capture fine, but we can’t change the footage now.
So for now, we are manually capturing each clip. This lets us edit the video now, but the part that worries me is what will happen if we need to recapture footage for any reason. Has anyone found a solution to this?
