Premiere hangs up
Posted by Steve Harrington on August 8, 2014 at 9:47 pmWorking off an iMac with a USB 3 drive connection. Getting this issue more frequently where my premiere just hangs up, meaning, it sometimes doesn’t respond while in the middle of working. it will allow me to save and then i need to close (force quit) and reopen.
how can i prevent this?

August 12, 2014 at 9:42 amIt’s always good to post some basic system specs otherwise you’re asking for the Amazing Kreskin to troubleshoot the issue.
Taking some stabs in the dark I would say:
1 – if you’re using Mavericks, make sure you’re on 10.9.4.
2 – if you’re working on a large project and have a low amount of RAM (less than 16GB to start) then get more RAM
3 – Trash your preferences
4 – clean your media cache
5 – maybe you have a corrupt project. See if other projects open and play okay. IF they do, then create a clean new project and then import the old one into it.HTH

August 13, 2014 at 3:32 amthanks. i have a mid 2011 iMac w/ maverick and 16 gb of ram.
I cleaned the media cache and it seems to be running a little more smooth.
Ive been comp-ing some 4k footage in a 2k seq so its probably tapping out on system resources.
is there any way to refresh to program if it hangs up or does it generally require a restart?

August 13, 2014 at 11:22 amSo if you’re comping 4k in AE and bringing that into Premiere Pro, you’re definitely going to hit a wall there. One thing that you want to consider for your imac would be more RAM. Think of the CPU as the engine and RAM as the gasoline. You can have a great engine, but if you don’t give it enough gas, it won’t go very far.
I think if you went to 32GB (probably the max) that it would make a big difference.
To answer your question, I bet if you just hung out, the mac would eventually catch up to you and keep you from restarting.
One other thing that might really help out is to get an SSD drive. Not only does it help boot time, it does help in overall performance in some cases.
