Premiere exports 4:3 still out of 16:9 footage
Dear Forum-readers!
I have a story of my footage that i want some screenshots out of:
Originally shot in 16:9, burnt to dvd in 16:9, encoded to dv avi out of dvd, but it only succeeded in 5:4, no black bars. So i imported the dv avi file in premiere and i chose ‘interpret footage’, checked the 16:9 option, and it is in 16:9 now again in premiere. Even if i export it to dv avi it’s in 16:9. But when i try to export a still, it comes out stretched in 5:4 or 4:3, i guess this goes back to the original encoded 5:4 dv avi, don’t know how and why. I did all this in a 16:9 project. Could anyone advise me something to solve this? I need some screenshots in 16:9, same resolution as original footage.
It would be also great help if you could recommend me some applications that i can make HQ screenshots with, in the same resolution and aspect ratio as my video footage is in.

If you are working with DV its a 720×480(ntsc) frame whether it 16:9 or 4:3, if its a 16:9 it has a different pixel aspect ratio 1.2 vice .89 for 4:3, if you are looking in a photo editor they are usually setup for square pixels so you have to adjust the aspect ratio to get a proper image.

The exported still does not hold the pixel aspect ratio used by the footage. It expots in square pixels. You need a program like Photoshop. Open a new ntsc widescreen psd file and import the still into this image. Strech it in the width to fill out and save.

This wasn’t 100% clear to me either. Adobe has this video tutorial that explains pixel aspect ratios in photoshop.
The video explains the ratios but doesn’t make it clear what to do. Similar to the previous reply you just need to create a new file with your desired aspect ratio. It doesn’t have to be a PSD it could be a jpeg, TIFF etc.
In my case I created a jpeg with the dimensions 1920×1080 at 72pixels/inch. In the file new dialogue box make sure it says square pixels under the advanced settings. I then opened up the file I exported from Premiere so I have them side by side in Photoshop.
Choose Ctrl+A to select the canvas of the Premiere export and Ctrl+C to copy the image. Move over to the new file you just created and do a Ctrl+V to paste. Everything should now look correct. Do a Layer>Flatten Image, then save out the file to whatever format you want and you’re done.
