  • Premiere editing R3D RED files, doing so well untill…

Posted by Luke Ogden on January 14, 2012 at 3:20 pm

For a recent project that required a 1080(w)x3840(h) deliverable video I had to shoot on a RED ONE in 4k, because of is native support for the R3D files Premiere was the obvious choice of NLE and I have to say it was an absolute breeze. Editing the 4k files like it was SD on a medium spec iMac off a SSD thunderbolt drive. Even in the weird 9:32 project. Amazing I thought. Then half way through my rough cut premiere grinds to a halt. Clips freeze while playing/scrubbing, appear as nothing in the source monitor, appear offline, i get the spinning color wheel every other click etc. I’m editing in a suite of these iMacs and have tried others to no avail.

    anyone one got any ideas?

I’m not too familiar with premiere but is there a trash preferences type thing that I might be overlooking?

    thanks in advance

    Luke

    1. Clean Meida Cache
    2. Delete any preview files
    3. Trash preferences and repair permissions

If your not familiar with these process, Google and the Manual are your friend. 😀

I’ve trashed preferences and cleared the cache using this method

looking into it I’m guessing “repairing permissions” is something only the system administrator can do?
which could be a problem because I am not the system administrator, just one of many users.

is this likely to be the root of the problem?

    thanks

You never know. Its just a good maintenance practice especially after adding or deleting software from your Mac.Usually deleting prefs and the cache will fix things.

Your really need to find the Preview Files folder and delete the preview files as well. More important than the Permissions.

I’ve located the preview files folder and found it to be empty, which makes sense; I was just doing my rough cut and hadn’t need to render the sequence yet. and there weren’t any from old projects as this is my first time using prem.

it may be my imagination but it looks like certain clips are causing the problem, is there a more robust work flow I could try out as a test. Converting to prores maybe?

    thanks

I could be wrong, but I dont think Prores does anything but 1920 x 1080. If you dont mind reducing your file size you might get better performance. Try one clip and see.

    Also,

If a particular clip in the timeline is modified, ie. fps change, color correction, transition, or any sort of effect; Premiere will tend to hang on that clip. You may also want to reduce the paused and playback resolution in the preview window. This normally decreases scrub time dramatically for me when editing r3ds.

    Cheers
