I have just started using the CS5 production bundle and I have one reoccuring problem which may be a problem with Premiere, but it could also be a problem with Windows 7.
I have a Lacie 1 TB hard drive connected to a new Toshiba Qosmio laptop by an e-sata cable. When I go to playout a timeline (16:9 Standard Def)there is from time to time a break in the video. I thought I had solved it by buying a new external drive that was Windows 7 ready but I still get the problem.
The laptop has two 500GB drives, and when I use the second internal drive, all is fine. I can’t imagine the external drive is so slow it can’t keep up but that is what it looks like.
I used this same configuration with an older computer and CS4 and never had this issue.

Just out of interest….do you get the same problem if you hook it up by USB only (presuming of course it has USB)

It does have USB…I will try that next. Meanwhile, I just started getting the same error with the internal drive. I am going into a Sony XDCam R1 deck and it gives me a reference error every so often and the video goes to black.
I will report back after I try the USB test.

Just remind me of your capture / sequence settings and general PC spec

The computer is a Toshiba Qosmio X500…with an i7 intel chip…1.73 GHZ. It has 8 Gig of memory. The Graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 360M with 1 GB of memory.
The project is an NTSC DV 16:9 with 48000 hz audio.

I am going to try the USB external drive connection now.

I don’t think this is a Premiere problem. I think this a deck sync problem. I may have a solution or I may not.

Your deck’s input should be set so that reference should be INPUT VIDEO. Anything else and it might be trying to reference to sync that it can’t find. (like an external clock or sync pulse generator) This is true of all pro/broadcast VTRs and may well be true of your XDCam VTR.

You need to make sure that the deck takes its sync from your input video not look for it elsewhere.

You might also hear the VTR servo struggling to look for sync as it records and this is a tell-tale sign of no proper reference signal.

Follow up: just how do you input to this deck?

That’s what I thought, but the settings seem to be correct and the deck records from a much older computer using CS4. One big difference between the two is the OS…32 bit Windows XP vs 64 Bit Windows 7. I wonder if my problem isn’t between the Sony R1 deck and Windows 7. I guess it could be something with the way Windows 7 handles firewire, and perhaps Sony hasn’t caught up yet. I have the latest firmware in the deck…so I’m just stumped.
I am trying a couple of other things, such as seeing if the length of the video makes a difference.
Thanks for your help Andy. If you can think of anything else I should try please let me know.

    I input through firewire.

Size seems to make a difference. If I keep the timeline under 10 minutes it goes through just fine. Puzzling.

On your deck….. Is the system settings (I think it’s setup 020) for reference alarm set to ON…. If so, your stop button should flash if it’s not getting reference to the deck…. If your not feeding deck reference, your deck will be free-running… and I’ve seen decks occasionally have to re-lock when the limit of frame-sync or TBC window is hit… This can also cause AES audio to “Tick” occasionally at a repeating rate…

If you have a black reference available, connect it to the deck and see if that gets rid of the un-locking…

If not, see if there is a reference setting that minimizes this…
