  • Premiere CS4 [Mac] Exports Video with Black Border/Randomly Darkens Clips

    HI All
    Greetings from Cape Town!

I’ve a real preplexing one here.. would appreciate some assistance.

    Issue ONE
Running Premiere CS4 on a MacPro, video exported to the mov format gets either a black border, pillar bars or letterbox around it.

    Issue TWO
In the same export above, random clips on the timeline get exported darkened [looks like it has 40% opacity applied]

    Issue THREE
In the same vein importing correctly exported video into Encore CS4, results in a pillarbars applied to the timeline.

    FURTHER DETAIL
    Premiere CS4 Seq Setting: 1440 X 1080; HDV 1080i
Footage Properties: HDV 1440 X 1080i; 25FPS; HDV 1080i50 Compressor. Captured in FCP to MOV files. Tried capturing via Premiere [mpeg], with same results as above.

    EXPORT SETTINGS
    Quicktime MOV
    Codec: Various [see below]
    1440X1080; 25 FPS, UFF, 1.333 Aspect Ratio

    EXPORT RESULTS:
MOV HDV 1080i50 – Exports with black border, clips randomly darkened
MOV NONE – Exports with clips randomly darkened
MOV ProRes 422 – Exports with clips randomly darkened
    FLASH [flv] – Exports fine
    MPG – Exports fine

I’ve got a feeling my troubles are caused by the quicktime codec [in both Premiere & Encore CS4] but would know if you guys have experienced anything similar, as well as possible solutions..

Thanks in advance for all assistance!

I will answer 1 and 3, and who knows, it may solve 2 🙂

I always export Quicktime as square pixels. I found that Quicktime doesn’t always handle non square exports well (at least on the windows side for anything other than 1.2)

So export 1920×1080 square, and that should solve all your border issues.

For exports to Encore, make sure you have files exported as 720×480 (1.2) for widescreen and you should be fine.

On issue #2, that could be attributed to an unsupported filter. Are you using any particular effects?

I should add that the fact that you captured in FCP could bring in issues as well, I would highly recommend capturing in Premiere instead.

Thanks for the reponse Vince :O)

Tried exporting 1920X1080 Square – black border still apears on exports.

WRT Encore – Do understand converting to DVPAL size, but with CS3 I could create a timeline with a piece of HD footage with no hassles. Encore would then handle the resize in the transcode..

For the purpose of geting rid of this prob I’d exported a number of clips from various projects, making sure no filters were applied. On another forum I’ve noted comments relating this behaviour to speed changes/remaps [with no solution] – my clips that appear darkened happen to also have Premiere time remaps/speed applied..

RE FCP Capture – As noted above, as a test I captured video directly in Premiere with the same results..

Maybe Premiere was just not [properly] made for a mac. And now I’ve got Adobe on the line who are of absolute no use..

    Jean Paul,

Again, I have no answer on the darkening issue, other than it probably has to do with Quicktime. Unfortunately, Quicktime updates seem to screw things up every so often. And I’m sure Apple doesn’t exactly get out of their way to help Adobe on that part…

That should be easy to verify by doing a quick capture in Premiere and applying the same effect.

On the bars issue, I would be ready to bet that the PAR / resolution is no longer 1440×1080 at 1.33, either than or Premiere is not interpreting correctly by default.

What does Premiere say if you right click on the footage and interpret?
