  • Premiere CS3 loads VERY slowly

HP xw6200 2 dual-core 3.6Ghz CPUs, 4GB RAM, Decklink HD Extreme PCI Express, latest Blackmagic drivers. 200GB SATA drive, 150GB U320 15k SCSI array, vStor video NAS (works very similar to EditShare products).

Premiere loads very slowly when starting a new project using Blackmagic presets (regardless of the type), and loads actual projects even slower after editing. I’m only talking about :30 spots here…not long timelines. But new projects take 8-10 seconds to load after clicking a BM preset. When opening an existing project, it can take 20-30 seconds or longer to load everything. This can’t be normal behaviour. It doesn’t matter if the video and audio files are on local drives, SCSI video arrays or on our vStor NAS (which is supposed to work with Premiere by the way and works flawlessly with our VelocityQ systems).

We’ve tried all the various BM codecs, uncompressed 8 and 10 bit, MJPEG, DV etc. Same behaviour regardless of codecs. Have run codec checks for corrupt or unregistered codecs, run RAM and hard drive tests (the motherboard, RAM and SATA drive are brand new and WinXP was freshly installed less than a month ago). Virtually nothing else running in background. There are only about a dozen processes running in total when Premiere is open.

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling BM drivers, tried uninstalling and reinstalling Premiere CS3 without any improvement. After Effects CS3 loads and exports/renders blackmagic files fine and works as expected in terms of speed.

Is this a Premiere issue or a Blackmagic driver issue? Compared to VelocityQ I can’t believe any professional video production facility could use the decklink extreme and Premiere CS3 if this is the performance we can expect.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Would installing older drivers be something to try?
