Premiere CS3 Beta is not really a Beta!
Posted by Thomas Santopolo on April 18, 2007 at 3:01 amNo Encore CS3, No HDV support (and all I shoot is HDV)! Really a wast of time. I don’t understand why release a Beta with no HDV support when trying to compete on a professional level particularly with FCP? And with all the hype of Encore CS3 outputting to flash – and then not include it? Boy am I disappointed. It is impossible to even attempt to evaluate CS3 without working with HDV footage.

April 18, 2007 at 3:24 amI believe it has to do with the fact that it is theorically a free release, so they can not include third party codecs / patents unless authorization has been given by these third parties. Not uncommon…

April 18, 2007 at 4:34 amI guess like Tom says it is not a Beta nor is it a preview because more than half the features (the important features) are missing. From a testing perspective you cant do much and if Adobe want to use it as a sales tool, well that fails too. You certainly wouldn’t buy it from what’s available. Good try anyway, Adobe. At least you’re thinking outside the box.

April 18, 2007 at 12:46 pmI also dnloaded/installed CS3 “beta”. Look for the features that was mentioned here, can’t find it. So, what’s its difference from PP2? Everything looks and feels the same… except time remapping, which I am still to figure out how to use correctly, is there a bizzare (I am sure I do not spell this right) curve to ease the slow mo? Is there a tutorial on how to use this? What’s else is “testable” out there in this BETA?

April 18, 2007 at 3:56 pmDon’t be confused. This beta is not for your benefit. It is for Adobe’s benefit. The idea is for you to find as many bugs as possible. If you do not want to do their work for them, then don’t. Other people will.
There is still a “private” beta with all of the features that the public can not see. That beta will test what you can’t.
One problem is that some of the features they plan to include may not be finished. They are not releasing this for a few months. They have time to get more done.
Another problem is that some features require a third party license and they can only provide that in the private beta or they would have to pay more than it is worth in fees.
This is not a trial. It is a public beta. Test what is available. Test your pet peeves. Even with the limited feature set, there are bugs being reported on the beta forum. Take part or not, it is your choice.
Many people like the idea of providing bug reports in time to get the fix into the next release. Others will wait and complain later. Both are valid options.
Check out the new bins. Check out the Windows Vista compatibility. Check it out on a Mac. This is not a waste of time for most people. If you are exclusively HDV and have Cineform Aspect HD, there appears to be a way to make that work. If you edit HDV native, there is not much in this beta for you.
Does this clear it up a bit?

April 18, 2007 at 11:15 pmSteve, thank you for your insight. I guess I was confused about Public Beta vs Private Beta, cause I myself have been a “Private Beta Tester” before. I hear what you are saying though, and it makes sense a little more now. However, I just hope they include a little bit more to test with. Right now, it seems I am not seeing any new feature there for me to test, except Time Remaping. I can not really do any test on quality, because, I can’t export. Just my $.02. Thanks for your help as always.

April 19, 2007 at 2:46 amSteven,
I think the so called beta really is for mac users. I was so looking forward to Encore CS3 so I am very disappointed. I am an Edius user but I also like Premiere, but working with HDV is painful in Premiere without aspect, but then I loose my compatibility with Edius. So I guess I was hoping for some improvement on HDV performance in premiere CS3, like a new HDV codec. I will say this, by the looks of things, anyone would be insane to use Premiere over FCP. I see the new HDV codec gives great real-time performance in FCP and you can purchase the entire studio for 1299.00 retail. Apple is definitely on the cutting edge in Video – I am thinking about it.
Also where did you find the info on using Aspect with CS3? -

April 19, 2007 at 3:16 amI found the Cineform info in the Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 Lab forum in a thread named: Cineform test results in PPro3 preview

That includes the computer or does it work on a straight PC? 😉

I’ll take PPro any day over FCP….and I would reserve judgement on it’s HDV ability until the final version is released.
