  • Premiere CS3 and Sony camera export to tape issue?

    Hi

I have been having an issue with exporting to tape (both DV and HDV) via Premiere Pro CS3 onto some models of Sony device.

What happens is that during playback, the video will freeze for a couple of seconds, then jump back to the correct place on the timeline. It appears to do this at regular intervals during the recording (e.g. roughly every 4-5 minutes).

The units that are affected are the Sony HVR-HC3 camera, and the Sony GV-HD700, which I believe are consumer models. Interestingly, the same thing DOES not happen on the Sony HDR-A1E (a professional model).

I believe there is some kind of conflict between the consumer models of the Sony devices (although I have not had the oportunity to try a different brand yet!).

I have updated Premiere to the 3.1.1 version, and attempted different project types and lengths, all with the same outcome.

Has anyone else had these issues, and does anyone have any ideas of what might be causing it and/or workarounds to solve it?

Is it freezing in the preview window while you export? Or have you watched/checked the final tape afterwards? Sometimes the preview window will glitch or be jumped and garbled, but it really isnt exporting to tape that way. If it is jumping/skipping on the tape, then I would think you have background processes going on, or are doing other things while it is exporting. when exporting to tape, you cannto have antivirus or messaging or email programs running…you have to ONLY have that running to ensure smooth export.

SHi Conner, thanks for the reply.

No, the freeze is definitely appearing on the final tape (played back on a different deck).

The systems I have tried this on are all brand new and just installed so there is no anti-virus etc etc on them at all – believe me, such programmes on an editing system are the bane of my life!

Hmm, then I do not know, since I do not have the hardware you are using. I am on a Dell dimension XPS desktop, and using a Sony DVCAM deck, model: DSR-11. Alhough I rarely need to export to tape, then 5-10 times I have, they have come out beautifully.

Maybe it is your tape stock? Try usuing Panasonic tapes, they are the highest quality. Also, try a different computer…I know that is a pain to unhook your deck, move it to another computer, install CS3 or at least the trial, then try again, but it is worth a shot to eliminate the computer hardware as being your culprit.

Yeah, this is the same result on three systems; two of the same spec (DG33FB Intel motherboards, 2gb RAM, tried both ATI and Nvidia graphics cards etc etc) and an old HP XW9300.

I’ve tried to be as thorough as possible in eliminating what it could be, and so far the only constant is the Sony devices as detailed above.

I’m having the same probelm with a very similar setup. I use premiere CS3 on a Dell Optiplex 755. Im trying to export to a Sony HVR-Z1U/Z1N. Did anyone find a solution to this problem? At this point, my only option appears to be to use a different camera.

    Hi there:
I am having an identical problem in exporting to tape using Premiere Pro CS4 and a Sony HDR HC7 (later model camcorder than the HDR HC3 that you were using). I rented a Canon HV20 and was able to make one perfect tape. However, the two subsequent tapes had a couple of glitches each. Maybe I needed to clean the head of the Canon and/or defragment the hard drive after I made the perfect tape. Did you ever confirm that the Sony camcorder was really your problem? How did you eventually solve the problem?
Any feedback that you have will help me.
    Thanks,
    Sandy

    Hi Sandy,

Unfortunatly, this issue was never resolved, and I am disappointed the issue remains in CS4.

A colleague of mine was in talks with Sony about the issue and I believe the conclusion was basically “live with it”, which is somewhat disappointing. It is something I have come across in several consumer Sony products now, and its a shame they don’t recognise it as an issue that requires attention.

    Regards
    Sam

I was having the same problem but knowing that it was probably the camera control causing it I turnied off activate recorder on the export to tape menu at the top. Find the record now on your dv camera menu and start recording and then hit the export button and everything went through just fine.
