I have to rip a DVD file to an .avi. The problem is, all these video file converters, free or otherwise, change a DVD file to what is really a DivX file. That seems to be the closest any of them come to an .avi file. Seems weird to me. I mean, why not just include .avi as a format?

Everytime I convert it, Premiere crashes on me. Is this because Premiere Pro 2.0 isn’t compatible with DivX 6.1.1?

Is there a video file converter that truely saves a DVD file to a basic .avi? The last software I tried was called PRISM video converter.

    Thanks,
    Phil

Copy dvd to hard disk, rename .vob to .mpg and import into Premiere, you can even save them out to dv-avi.
Or hook your dvd-player to a camera with video-in.

AVI is just a wrapper. It can contain all kind of things. Saying you need an AVI is like saying you need an animal. It does not say what animal. Is it a lion, a salmon, a spider, a mouse, a pig, a chicken, a grasshopper, etc.

PP likes MS-DV AVI type2. Anything else may not work. So convert to that format before using PP.
