Premiere crashes when I try to choose fonts
Posted by Matthew Baker on May 12, 2008 at 9:16 pmI just started using Premiere Pro 3 and whenever I attempt to scroll down to a font beyond the letter “K” in the text editor, it completely crashes. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

May 13, 2008 at 1:27 amHave you upgraded to version 3.2.0 ???
I believe they addressed some font issues in the patches.

May 13, 2008 at 3:20 amYes, it is 3.2.0. I remember hearing something about font fixes for that upgrade as well. I tried deleting a few of the fonts where it was crashing (thinking it may have been a corrupt file), but that didn’t work either.
Thanks

May 13, 2008 at 11:12 amDo your fonts work in other apps? Do you have ATI card? There is a bug in ATI driver that causes OpenType font to malfunction and this makes Premiere titler crash.

May 13, 2008 at 12:38 pmThe 3.2 update should have solved this issue.
However you can select the box and then start typing in the name of the font you want it should come up without the buggy crash.
Update the version though. You need to use the update function in Help.

May 13, 2008 at 2:09 pmYes my fonts do work fine in other applications. And yes I do have an ATI card… Very interesting, do you know a fix for the ATI driver bug?
Many thanks!

May 13, 2008 at 2:12 pmThanks for the tips, although even if I type in the name in the font box, it still crashes… Anything over the letter “K” will cause Premiere to seize.
The version I have is 3.2.0, which I believe is the newest available.
Thanks!

May 13, 2008 at 5:55 pmI’ve been dealing with this bug since CS3 came out. I haven’t checked to see if it still happens in 3.2, but it wasn’t fixed in all the previous updates.
I’ve got an Nvidia card, so it’s not an ATI card issue. The issue, from what I’ve learned, is that PPro has issues with fonts – corrupt fonts to be exact. If you’re like me, you’ve probably built up quite a font library over the years, and now some of those fonts are causing the problem.
Even though they work in all the other CS3 apps just fine (and previous versions of PPRO), PPro CS3 doesn’t like them, and that’s what is causing the crash.
The best thing to do is to get a Font Manager program and use that. I haven’t done it yet myself – I guess I’m holding out hope Adobe fixes this so I don’t have to spend extra money.
Hope this helps!

May 13, 2008 at 6:24 pmGood information! I actually have a font manager program but it is currently on the blink as well… So let me verify, you are not having any font malfunctions with your NVIDIA card?
I was just getting ready to buy a new ATI card, but this might be a good thing to know before I do.
Thanks again!

May 13, 2008 at 7:08 pmNo – as far as I know, it still exists. I haven’t really tested it since upgrading to 3.2…I’ve grown in the habit of making most of my titles in Photoshop or animated in AE. When I have used the titler, I’ve been very careful when choosing fonts.
I’ll check later today, but changing video cards I don’t think will make difference.

May 14, 2008 at 7:36 amHmm you are right, it crashes all the time on my home computer with Nvidia card.
Even though Extensis FontDoctor says all fonts are working.
Adobe needs to fix this.
