Premiere cc – strange lag on playhead when scrubbing

Two things come to mind.

if you’re using CUDA, make sure you’re using the current NVIDIA driver for starts. If you use the standard WHQL Win7 driver, then it won’t be optimized.
what source footage are you using? If AVCHD or similar type media, scrubbing can be difficult because of the temporal nature of the codec. looking at your RAID might be a good suggestion. on a similar note, if your RAID is fairly full, consider trying to clear out as much space as possible and optimize it.

Latest nvidia drivers updated last week and had the same issue before. I’m working mainly with Hdv footage.

I just find it really strange that I get a considerable difference in performance depending on where I click to move the play head.

I,ll take a look at the raid drive and give it a defrag but its relatively new and only about 50 percent full.

I’ve got another external raid array via e-Sata attached which isn’t really used for anything. I’ve turned off indexing on all drives too.

I have the exact same issue, with a 50% full RAID and AVC HD Footage. Very strange. Did your digital time clock add some extra digits as well?

First, my ‘clock’ (for lack of a better term this is the digital numbers representing the playhead position in the top right of the timeline), was appearing like 00+0.

Then after I adjusted some settings right on the actual sequence (specifically clicked on show Audio units), the ‘clock’ appeared back in the top right, but this time with 3 extra digits.

Clock reads 00:36:40:38115 – when i scrub it goes up only one digit at a time (38116, 38117, etc.)

Upon further inspection, I am pretty sure its my RAID. But what am I to do. It is less then 50% full after I cleared over a 1/2 of TB. Is there a way to update/optimize it?

AVCHD and HDV footage are both more challenging to scrub since they’re longGOP codecs. That said, I have found CC to do a much better job at scrubbing on longGOP footage than CS6. As for NVIDIA drivers, they had a few drivers recently that I found to be problematic so for the time I am using 310.90 WHQL. NVIDIA is working to resolve the issue and new drivers should be posted soon (they’re in beta).

As for the HDD… what’s your sustained read/write speeds? Is it a RAID 0? If not, consider switching it to RAID 0 to get maximum performance. Beyond that, just fully optimize the drives by defragging. There are tons of PC utilities and probably at least one Mac one.

Thanks Dennis. I’m running RAID 5 on an enclosure attached via Esata to my mid 2010 mac pro.

I ran disk utility on the enclosure and everything came back great. So I opened up another premiere project (with the same type of footage AVCHD), that was running off a different drive and the problem was fixed.

Believing it was the RAID, I move the project to that drive and made my post. However, when I opened the project on the other drive, I was faced with the same issue.

I’m assuming it has to be the footage in the project, but I can’t imagine what makes this project different then the 12-15 just like it I recently finished.

Ok, just for anyone else experiencing something similar, I thought I would update.

Yes, it has to be the footage.

However, I have shot footage before and after with all the same pieces (gh3, San Disk extreme sd card). All were shot at 60p in AVCHD.

The only difference that I can gather is before shooting my footage, on the same card, I shot a timelapse of the setup for the party. I’m assuming somehow that caused the footage’s timecode to be off, which in turn caused this issue.

Again, this is just speculation, but I can’t imagine what else it could possibly be.

His laptop is getting super smooth scrubbing with the exact same footage running off the same external drive. It’s pretty frustrating seeing how premiere should perform and not knowing why mine isn’t.
