Premiere-CC 2015 on NAS
Hey guys,
you are my last hope. I’ve called Adobe US/German, Synology, our Admins and nearly every forum in every dark hole of the internet. My problem is: I’m working with two windows clients (8.1 but also tried 10) on Premiere 2015 (newest version). Both clients are connected via 1GBit to a synology 1813+. My transfer rates via AJA Test Software or Windows Explorer are perfect. Nearly 120MB/s read and write.
While working in Premiere-CC and importing Files over MediaBrowser (or import panel also) Premiere needs a lot of time to display content in media browser and a lot of time importing my files in the project. A 50GB XDCAM Disc needs over 6 Minutes to import.
I’ve checked the same on our Mac with same cables, router, switches, all the same but mac and it needs only a minute.
On my two PCs I did a test with CS6 and this also takes only 1 minute. So it’s a problem with cc, isn’t it?
So what’s the problem with that? Is Premiere better on a mac than on an windows pc with my synology? Or is there some thing I can do?

to clarify….
1) You’ve copied a XDCAM disc to your NAS
2) now you are navigating to the NAS and trying to import the material into PPro?

Yes – I’ve copied the whole XDCAM Disc via Content Browser to my NAS an then I import via MediaBrowser from my NAS intro Premiere.
Like I said – with CS6 this step needs 40 Seconds – Premiere-CC over 6 Minutes…

been a while since I’ve used XD Cam. Are they natively mp4 files?
1) what happens if you use content browser and place the material on your local drive? Does Ppro still behave slowly?
2) if you you are pulling the whole disc and not selects, is there a benefit to going thru Content browser? Does it do anything to the material (re-wrap it as a .mov)?
3) how do non XD Cam clips behave coming from the NAS?

Its MXF Files. Content Browser do not wrap anything. Just copy the disc structure to hard drive
Files on my local drive (ssd) are fast so I guess it must be something within the network traffic…
On NAS One big File is fast, 30 small files and I have the mentioned lag.Yesterday I have the same problem with PRORES mov – so it doesn’t matter which codec :-(.
I get a message from a technican at adobe germany yesterday and he said the only thing he would mention because of the differece between CS6 and CC on my machine is to proof the “readahead cache”.
On my NAS I don’t find anything like that but I will try it out with synology.

Until you mentioned the issue with ProRes, I was going to ask if the audio was conforming during the lag…but ProRes wouldn’t conform.
It definitely sounds like a PPro version issue as you’ve trouble-shot all around it (other platforms/other versions).

Ok….so that does point clearly to the NAS as the issue…
and it doesn’t seem to be related either to XDcam specifically
also….if one big file works quickly, but a many small ones do not…that’s an indicator that a fast read/write test doesn’t always indicate the best performance…as the test probably performed a sustained single read/write…
do you know the configuration of the drives in the synology?
how much RAM?
DHCP or dedicated IP?
overall….I’d ask what is the workflow you are trying to achieve?
maybe there is another way to tackle this.

I’m not familiar with that NAS but we’ve been running Premiere Pro on a NAS since we switched to it three years ago. First with CS6 and now the CC line. Most of our systems are 10Gig but we do have a few that are still 1gig.
The 1gig performance is much slower than 10Gig. We used to run Small Tree and now run Studio Network Solution for our NAS. Both were designed specifically for video editing. Is your NAS specifically designed for video editing or just regular networking? There is a difference.

after days of testing and try and error with network protocol tuning and so on…I’ve just thought about what could slow down my system and finally I’ve just deactivated the normal swap file of windows…now it works as it should…

Honestly it’s a lucky coincidence.
In addition to the message from adobe yesterday about read ahead cache I’ve tried TCP Tunings with many Tuning Tools – checking my NAS if there is anything I can tweak but nothing changed Premieres behavior. So I thought about “caches” in Windows and finally remembered about this windows swap file in den system settings…
