  • Premier Pro CS3 auto-saves as Encore file I can’t open

Posted by Jeff Bishop on May 22, 2008 at 4:04 pm

I clicked on my Premier Pro auto-save folder and found out PP is saving my project back-ups as Encore files. When I click on one it says “cannot open project; The folder for this project cannot be found.”
I also tried saving the project with a “save as” command to the hard drive and it was also an Encore file which could not be opened. My “20 minute back-ups” do me no good if I can’t get to them. Any solutions?
    Thanks in advance

I can’t imagine how fouled up your system would have to be to have Premiere Pro save Encore files. It just isn’t possible as far as I know unless you have some serious registry problems.

It is not that I don’t believe you, I just don’t think that Premiere Pro has the necessary code to save Encore files. It is more likely that your file associations in Windows have gotten fouled up.

Something is messed up on the system. I don’t know why .prproj files would be associated with Encore. I can tell you firsthand that Premiere CANNOT write Encore files.

Try opening them with File > Open from within Premiere.

Thanks to George & those who’ve responded so far. In my Premier Pro auto-save file, the file icon says EN.It has the name of my project and .prproj. When I click on properties it says:

    Type of file: PRPROJ file
    Opens with: Adobe Encore

When I click on it, it tries to open the file in Encore and then gives the message I wrote earlier: “cannot open file…”

So it’s kind of a Premier Pro/Encore hybrid file…Any other ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks to Mike J. for your great suggestion. I was able to open the auto-save files by opening Premier Pro first and then clicking on File>Open Project and it worked! I have my safety net back again. What a helpful forum you folks have here.

    Thanks to all who responded.

You need to fix your file associations. Just right click on the file in Explorer and select Open With, select Choose Program and find Premiere Pro after you check the checkbox that says “Always use the …”
