  • Premier Pro Crashing “program not responding” when I edit

Posted by Ginger Gentile on October 14, 2012 at 11:01 pm

A few months ago made the switch from Avid to Premier Pro 5 (and got a new PC work station) and it has been great, until today.
A Premier project I am working on would open but crash (“not responding” error message from windows) as soon as I touched a timeline, so I forced it to close and then it would stall when conforming clips. I had a back up of the project, was able to open it and watch footage, but it Premier would time out when I tried to edit (move a piece of footage from one place on the timeline to another).
I have tried to open all of the premier pro projects I have, and the same thing happens.
I only use this work station to edit on premier pro, no internet connection, so no virus risk. The projects I am using have a lot of footage (one has 40 plus hours of EXCAM HD footage) but the project is on the same raid as the footage.
Since they keep crashing, I am unable to troubleshoot nor do I get an error message from adobe.
Two weeks ago I cleaned up the cache and old render files, but the past two weeks have been working with no problems.
I would appreciate any advice in general on working with projects with a lot of footage.
    specs:
    windows 7 ultimate 64bit
    16 ram memory
    2 Raids 1,81TB
    C disk 250 GB

Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this?
    THANKS!
ps working on premier 5 but plan on upgrading to PP 6 soon

I have had some luck when a project file has gone corrupt, by starting a new project and importing the old one into it. But to have all your old saves not working too, that’s strange.

Have you had issues starting a new project and editing with the same footage?

I did that and it keeps crashing, in one form or another.
Now, it won´t conform files, it freezes with 505 files left to conform. If I touch premier windows responds that the program is not responding.
This is happening on all my projects.
Is this something that can be taken care of with a reinstall of premier or is there some other way to trouble shoot?

I waited an hour and the files conformed. I played back a few seconds (worked) and then hit save project. Premier freezed again.
How can I trouble shoot this? I can´t even check settings on the project because it keeps freezing on me.
    thanks!

If this is happening with new projects as well, with all different types of footage, I would have to think reinstalling is the next logical option.

Let us know what happens, Ginger.

This happened to me once, for no apparent reason. Having tried everything as I am sure you have, I was pulling my hair out by the roots when a friend suggested there might be an incompatibility issue involving video cards and plug-ins. In my desperation I uninstalled my NewBlueFX and… never had that problem again. I love NewBlue and I miss them dearly and this may not be your problem, I am just thinking you should try to remember if you changed/added anything on your system right around the time the problem occurred.

    Fingers crossed,
    Vasco

No, I haven´t made any changes to my system when this happened, nor have I changed the system since I stated using it.
The only thing I can think of is that I captured about 5 hours of HDV tape to use in the project (the project is set on HD), but I had about an hour of captured tape from the beginning and this did not cause any problems.

    UPDATE:
I deleted render files from the sequence menu.
It seems to be working fine now. I will keep you updated if problem returns, knock on wood!
BTW, I am noticing that there are two files on my Hard Drive, one called
    “media cache” with about 600kb
    and another called
“media cache files” with about 34GB of files.
I have cleaned the media cache from within the project and then, at the advice of another editor, deleted files manually.
Any idea why there are two files?
Would also appreciate any advice on how often to clean media cache and render files, considering that this is a very large project.
    Thanks!
