  • preferences disappear every time I close and re-open FCP

I’ve been editing full time on FCP for 2 years and recently this strange phenomenon has occurred without realizing why. Every time I open FCP all preferences reset to default. It’s as if FCP can no longer find those preference files. I’ve tried trashing preferences with FCP closed and then resetting them. But when I open FCP again…back to default. I didn’t knowingly do anything different and have not updated or upgraded recently. Any ideas to troubleshoot this one? Thanks!

The .plist file has probably gotten it’s permissions scrambled, happens. So even if you rebuild it or replace it, it still can’t be modified later because the name of the file is on a list that tells the OS you do not have privielges for it.

REpair permissions on your system drive with Disk Utility or start from your Tiger install disk.

Post back if that doesn’t do it for you. The next thing to check will be trying to locate the .plist file in question. It may be in the wrong Library folder.

As Bogie says, and if all esle fails check your User Prefereces to make certain that the box is checked for “Open last project on application launch.”

About two weeks ago I too started experiencing the same issues. I trashed prefs, repaired permissions, started with a clean setup and used FCP Rescue all to no avail. What I finally tried was recalling the project that I was working on and saving it as a new project. Closed the old one and trashed it. Saved the new one again and voila…no problems. I backed up the prefs using Rescue and I’ve been rock solid until I had to recall a commercial that I had edited one month ago. Same issue. Saved the project as a new project and started over. It’s been rock solid for a week. I don’t use the recommended “Open last project on application launch” because I work on various projects in any given day. But I will if I see this happen again. I hope this helps. I had posted this problem on Apple and nobody responded. The Cow should be commended.

Thanks so much to you all. Since I’m on the “other side of the pond” I found all your answers this morning. What a refreshing start to the day to find the solidarity of other grazers. I’ll try all suggestions and post back my results. Thanks again! Long live the Cow!

My results: I did a safe boot of my computer (restarting while holding down the shift key) and then used disk utilty to repair permissions. I restarted FCP and thought all was fixed since my preferences loaded perfectly. I closed FCP, re-opened it and was back to square one. Taking the idea from Bogiesan I used “spotlight” and typed in the fcp.plist file name Voil
