  • Preconverting using Lagarith to Avoid H264 crashes- Which Program???

Posted by Will Stanton on July 5, 2011 at 5:23 am

I have completely given up trying to bring in h264 video from my contourHD camera into Vegas. The program will stop working, crash, give a false low memory error, etc etc etc. Sometimes it will preview, sometimes not.

To get around this problem, I used the advice in this forum: Convert the h264 video to avi as losslessly as possible using LAGARTIH CODEC.
Since I have 2TB drives, this should work.

Then import AVI into Vegas and make some progress…

But my question is: What program do I use to convert the .mov h264 file format to avi using the Lagarith codec.

PS I have installed the codec on my machine. Sony vegas actually converted 1 h264 .mov file to avi using lagarith, but it wont even import any of my other .mov files–I just get red in the preview window. (VLC plays these files fine and does nto drop any frames)
    ).

You can use AviDemux to convert the files to Huffyuv or Motion-JPEG. It does not see my Laragith codec for some reason. Huffyuv is just as good as Lagarith. There really is no reason to use a lossless format unless you plan to re-render multiple times. Motion-JPEG should be fine and will produce much smaller files. You could even use Photo-JPEG which is what stock footage houses use to deliver archival footage. MPEG Slipstream is another good program for converting MOV files to AVI but it does not use Lagarith either.

Well one thing about using lossless is that there are not too many choices to make regarding bitrate, motion estimation, blah blah blah.

I tried AviDemux but it wants to split the files up into 1600 megabyte chunks, gives me warnings about either crashing or losing frame accuracy if the source uses B frames (I dont know and dont care), and, in general, is a pain in the ass.

Is there a simple program where you open the H264 video and hit a button to save it using a lossless codec such as Lagarith…a simple program that preserves resolution and frame rate and maybe defaults to saving the audio as uncompressed PCM?

    I’ll try slipstream tommorrow…..

I am still looking for a program to change H264 to .avi as losslessly as possible. Avisynth crashes more often than Vegas. Slipstream is for Apple.

I looked at a program called Super but it wants to dump spyware on my system, so I cannot install it.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try MP4Cam2Avi then convert resulting file to Lagarith (if you need to) with Virtualdub.
