preconform multiple reels within same project?
Posted by Blase Theodore on December 9, 2010 at 2:40 pmWhen using a preconform workflow, I can load in a single QT clip and notch it based on an EDL.
This is simple and effective, but requires me to make a new project file for every reel. If I were to load all of the picture reels and EDL’s into the same clip, it gets confused. It would be really nice to have all of the reels self contained in the same project. Has anyone figured out a way to do this?

December 9, 2010 at 7:14 pmI’ve built longplay time lines along with long play edl’s. I have found the performance starts to suffer with that much material in a single time line.

December 9, 2010 at 8:02 pmRight, I don’t want to do that (though it seems to be ok on SD material).
I want to load a project with 4 quicktimes, each a picture reel. Then create 4 edl’s based on preconforms, all within the same project. Currently I have to create 4 projects, each with its own reel_X.mov and reel_X.edl.
Not a show stopper, just mildly annoying.

December 9, 2010 at 8:33 pmI totally agree.
Movies normally come and go in 4-6 reels.
Would be nice to have them in 4 timelines in the same project.
But…cant you splitt the long QTs and make real EDLs ? -

December 9, 2010 at 8:40 pmWhen I did that, resolve got confused as to which media its supposed to use to preconform. It generates a screwed up timeline.

December 9, 2010 at 11:22 pmI usually like to use the Scene Detection feature as a handy way to check and edit a client-provided EDL (usually I find plenty of through-edits etc). I load each quicktime into the scene menu, then load the client-provided EDL to notch it, check the edits, change where necessary, split and add media, save a new EDL, then load the EDL from scene detection in the conform window.
I don’t recall having any trouble with multiple reels, as each reel begins with a new hour timecode, each EDL loads without conflicts (if each reel has a new hour timecode). Sometimes I use the media browser to change the timecode of a source clip to suit…

December 10, 2010 at 4:29 amHi Blase,
I recommend adding each reel to a separate folder in the media pool. When you preconform the EDL, you can tell it look in that specific folder.
This is similar to the way we do 3D as well where you put the Left eye media in the Left folder, and similarly for the Right eye media.
Hope this helps.

December 11, 2010 at 4:38 amGreat idea Rohit,
I build 3d timelines and work in 3d all the time and didnt think about this as a way to manage each reel.
As you can imagine I have hundreds of sessions to manage during my past 5 years on the box..
I have so many projects Its very hard to sort through them.. This will really help decrease the number of sessions. Thanks,
