    Sorry, this is a REALLY basic concept, but what’s the difference between precomposing layers rather than just m,aking them a comp, and then dragging them into a new comp?

    Basically, it’s just easier.

    By using the precompse option and depending on which radio button you selcect, you can move certain layers or attiributes to another comp becuase you don’t need to move the entire comp into another comp. This is useful for certain jobs such as moving keyframes.

    Hit F1 and check the AE documentation. There is an entire page on understanding precomposing.
