Is there a way to move pre-comps on the timeline (tabs) into a folder so I don’t have to scroll through all of them to get to the main comp? I am not talking about the project window (which has folders), but the actual timeline for the comp which also has the series of tabs on top to represent all of the precomp into the project?

There is no such option, although I really would like to have it too 😉

But you can either put all the precomps you want to have in a folder in a second pre-comp and turn on the continuous rasterization (a pre-comp IS a folder if you look at it that way) or you could turn on the shy layer switch and just make them invisible for the time you need.
