Precise timecode using DV deck
I have to help someone play out a short project to tape, from FCP. At the moment they seem to have a Sony GV900E portable DV deck and a Z1 camera. My experience of most mini-DV decks is that you can’t play out to a particular timecode – ie. starting the film at 10.00.00.00 or whatever. Am I wrong? Is it possible to accurately control these decks?

Nope, you are right. There was an OLD trick…talking FCP 5.o and earlier trick. But the software that allowed for that is outdated and doesn’t work on the latest two OS versions. Plus I had only been able to get it to work on the DSR-11…not sure how it worked with other decks.

CONTROL? Yes. Layback timecode with the proper start time? No. They are cheap for a reason, they are players only. Well, you can PRINT TO VIDEO to get something back to tape, but if you need professional settings, you will need a better deck.
