  • Pre renders more efficient than dissolving between layers?

I’m working on a project that has 220 GB of pre-rendered movies, that aren’t doing much. This project still runs very slowly, and takes a lot of time to render. Is it faster to just dissolve between layers, and use whatever warping effects instead of pre-rendering so many huge .mov files?

I’m really not sure what you’ve got going on in your project. Generally speaking, it is faster for AE to deal with pre-rendered things rather than having to calculate everything fresh.

That said, a lot can vary depending on what content you’ve got in your project, the storage your pre-rendered files are sitting on, and even what format you pre-rendered them as.

There’s a great, new-ish feature in After Effects called the composition profiler that shows you exactly how Ae is spending its render time. You can use this to see a breakdown of render times for individual layers, effects, styles, and masks.

With this tool, you could run a quick test to see what performs better on your system. As Michael mentions, there are a lot of variables that will affect performance.
