Pre-conform & Common Source Clip Indicator
Posted by Patrick Woodard on February 16, 2011 at 10:31 pmI wanted to know if it is possible to pre-conform a self-contained QuickTime yet keep the relationship between common source clips? If not currently possible I’d hope to see this feature added. The edl could give the Resolve clip names to determine which cuts are linked to the same common source.

February 17, 2011 at 2:48 pmCould the “A/C mode” switching and “Group” functions help you achieve this.
“Split” the clips using the EDL in the Pre-Conform mode then toggle the “A/C Mode” which will sort the clips in source time code order. Now highlight all the similar clips, right mouse clip on one of the VSRs and select “Add into Group”. Everything in this group will now contain the same color correction. Other scenes can be added into new groups, and each group named accordingly.
This doesn’t give you quite what I think you are asking for but it can be a great time saver and help maintain color consistency throughout the program.David Catt

February 17, 2011 at 7:25 pmThe projects I work on originate from SR tape from Alexa or Genesis cameras. They are onlined using Final Cut Pro.
I’ve decided the best workflow (excluding RED R3D Files) is to self-contain a QuickTime from the final online sequence, rather than linking to media in the Resolve. The reason for self-containg the final timeline has to do with the sequence consisting of speed changes, repositionings, effects, 3rd-party transitions, smooth cams, all of which don’t make it into an edl.
Some prefer to work off media knowing the limitations of an EDL and simply render in source mode. In FCP you just relink to color material for a finished timeline. I dislike this method for the following reasons – 1. When previewing with a DP or other client I have to explain what we are looking at isn’t final, all the speed effects, repos will be addressed later. This causes a lot of flipping back and forth between applications for previewing and color grading. 2. Every time you render a change you need to re-QC the FCP sequence to make sure the proper clips are relink to the current color changes.
I prefer to work off of self-contained QuickTime, however the one drawback is losing the connection to common source clips. It would be great if the edl could not only tell the resolve where the cut points are but which shots are linked together based off of the clips names.

February 18, 2011 at 1:18 amI get what your doing and that makes sense, we also do a lot of long form in a similar method, 1 QT clip that you add using the pre-conform method to split the edits.
Right now there is no way to retain similar clips from the edl, but what david suggested would work, grouping in A mode sort then back to C mode grading. What your asking for is a feature request that could be useful.
The only problem I see is would be if you have multiple camera angles from any 1 particular source reel that require different grades, an auto grouping method like you mention from edl reel numbers would include all shots from that reel/tape
So then you’d probably have to go through and un-group all the shots that you don’t want linked. The only way to help that would be to have a timecode look ahead to group a range of time within a reel.
It has merit but I think it has problems too, I like david’s solution.
