Pre comps not changing independently?
Hi,
I’m a bit of a nooby and have the following problem.
I have 8 pre comps.
Inside each comp is an image and some accompanying text.
The first pre comp is called “Image 1”. The text says “message 1” and so pre comp 1 will contain an image and “message 1”.
The 2nd pre comp is a replica to the first except it contains a mask in the middle of the image to give the overall and combined effect a boost, this pre comp is called “image1mask”.
The 3rd pre comp however, is called “image 2” and is a separate image and says “message 2”
I have repeated the steps above until the 8th pre comp, which contains the 4th image and the mask for “image 4” pre comp.
The problem is this:
I want to replicate pre comps “image 1” & “image1mask” so i dont have to recreate them all over again.
I want to be able to call these pre comps “image 5” & “image5mask” respectively.
When I change ANYTHING in the “image 5” & “image5mask” pre comps however, it updates those changes to “image1” & “image1mask”.
How do i uncouple these?
All i did was duplicate the first 2 comps and then rename them to image 5 etc.

that isn’t confusing..ha! well I believe what you what is simply re-import another copy of your project into itself then drag the comps out you need again. also aescripts has a comp to project script.

Maybe this thread will help a bit more( I made it earlier) as i know the above is confusing – yet VERY detailed lol
Why can’t I just change the name of it and AE just recognise it’s different – its such a pain!!!

Maybe I can word it in a simpler fashion..
How do you stop a duplicate pre comp, from updating the pre comp you copied?
I duplicate pre comp1
I get a pre comp called copy of pre comp 1
I update or make changes to the copy yet it updates the original. How do i stop this?

Pre-comps are treated just like any other footage item when they’re in your timeline. Simply duplicating the main comp that holds them does not duplicate footage items within it.
Check out the True Comp Duplicator script — it will duplicate your main comp as well as sub-comps.

Just as a heads up I solved the problem.
All i needed to do was duplicate the pre comps in the PROJECT and NOT in the timeline.
Simples! 🙂
