August 14, 2006 at 11:33 amNothing, essentially. Basically the differnce is being able to nest the comp before it is created.
1. to nest a comp, one comp must be made and then put into another comp.
2. to precompose, select 1 layer or more and they will be put into an automatic comp and then replaced by this comp. It’s more of a workflow thing neither is better but one will get you to your next step quicker… depending on where you start.

August 14, 2006 at 7:44 pmOk, I have a follow up to this question. What’s the difference between moving all attributes to the new comp and not doing it? The dialoge box always comes up, and I do whatever the tutorial I’m following says to, but am not really sure why sometimes you should, but other times you wouldn’t. My own projects would probably look a lot more organized and user friendly if I could figure this out.
Thanks!

August 15, 2006 at 8:47 amI *think* it’s something to do with keeping stuff like the cropping of layers, etc. constant with either the comp you started in or the new one you’re making?…
Although I’m not totally sure myself! Come on veterans, lets have a definitive answer!
By the way..just downloaded AFX 7.0 Pro and played with it for about an hour – it’s blummin ace compared with 5.5 Pro! I’d buy that for a dollar.

‘What’s the difference between moving all attributes to the new comp and not doing it?’The difference comes down to why you are precomposing. for example, an instance where you’d want your attributes moved to a new comp is if you have an effect on a layer that also has a mask. some effects will not ‘read’ the mask — so it needs to be precomped with the attributes sent off to the new comp.

Ok, so when would it NOT be a good thing to move attributes to the new comp? Should I just automatically choose the move all attributes option? I seem to remember a few tutorials where it said not to. I can’t remember which ones, or what the circumstances were, though.
Thanks for taking the time to help.

August 17, 2006 at 10:22 amthere are times when you wouldn’t want to send it across, but i can’t think of any off the top of my head. more often than not, though, you send it all through…
