  • PPro to AE Dynamic linking- single clips or entire sequences?

Posted by Jim Bachalo on August 30, 2011 at 3:27 am

    Hi
Doing all my CC and grading in AE. for the first time. However not sure if its a best practice to work with single clips at a time, or if I should link entire sequences?

If you do the entire sequence at once, then your ability to do any editing in PPro is, in essence, eliminated. For that reason I like to export clips individually, but keep them all in the same AE file.

But if you’re sure your picture is locked (absolutely sure) then I can’t see a reason why you couldn’t take an entire sequence over in one shot.

Since Murphy s Law is always a factor, I suggest doing each clip separately within one AE project

For what it’s worth, when I’m working a 30-second commercial that’s more-or-less locked, I’ll send the entire thing to AE and stay in AE. If there are any tweaks, I’ll make them in AE. Definitely not recommended for longer projects, or projects where only one or two shots need AE, but otherwise I’ve found it simpler to stay in one app.

I’m working on a 5 minute short, and will use dynamic linking at the very end, once I’m sure my edit is locked. Of course I will also duplicate my master render sequence in PPro BEFORE dynamic linking in case I need to make further edits. The advantages of working in 1 comp in AE far outweigh the disadvantage of being ‘locked-in’, especially if you like working with multiple adjustment layers for your CC and grading.
Now, if only Finesse had built in masking support…

Jim, one fun little trick I borrowed from my days of cutting in Avid DS and doing motion graphics work in AE is this…

    1. Cut my seq in PrP.
    2. Identify my first clip to be sent to AE.
    3. Duplicate that clip, drag it to V2 and deactivate it (right click)
    4. Send the clip on V! to AE as a DL.

This way I have an immediate reference to the original clip if I need it.Yet its invisible to the timeline. It works great!
