  • PPro CS6 improving performance or Spinning Beach Ball go away!!

    Hi
    Setup
    iMac Intel 3.4GHz i7 with 16GB RAM

PPRo and AE CS6 running on OSX 10.7.3

I copy all my working files to my local drive for any project I am working on.

Whenever I am working on a project of more than the simplest complexity, I experience HUGE performance problems. My finder becomes unresponsive and almost any action I take in premiere results in watching the spinning beach ball from anywhere from 10 seconds to a couple minutes!

    Activity monitor observations-
Both PPro and AE mostly hover below 10%CPU usage, though occasionally PPro spikes over 100.
And intermittently both report ‘unavailable’ when I am experiencing performance issues

I suspect most of my performance issues have to do with using dynamic linking between PPro and AE.
If I try and quite AE when using dynamic linking, the quit process takes up to a couple minutes!

What I’m hoping is that someone can offer some performance tips to make my system usable and allow deadlines to be met as I can’t afford a new CUDA enabled MacPro 🙁 (though my next PC will likely be a windows machine)

What are some factors that effect general performance when using PPRO?
    -number of files in project?
-number of linked comps in project?
-number of video, audio layers in active sequence?
-number of active video, audio layers?
-number of linked comps in active sequence?
-number of active libked comps in active sequence?
    -third party plugins?
    -complexity of linked comp?

-whether AE is open or closed when using dynamic linking and in PPro?

When using dynamic linking, does it matter if you keep ALL your linked comps in 1 master After Effects project, or should you break it up into a number of smaller projects?

Any other tips to help improve performance?

    Any feedback appreciated!

Jim, to be clear, you are not working with your media and other large files directly on the drive with the OS on it are you? When you say you copy all your working files to your local drive, what exactly do you mean? If you are trying to run all your clips off your OS’s hard drive, that could be a problem. My assumption is that you are using your media files on an external FW800, eSata (with add on card) or Thunderbolt drive. You’ve got plenty of RAM and a great processor, so that’s not the issue.

If you are using the media on your local drive, how full is your hard disk? Rule of thumb is that it should not be allowed to be over 80% full, and even that is asking for problems.

If that’s not what you meant, then sorry about the misunderstanding.

Yes I am running off the same drive as my OS but only half full (400GB of 1TB total)

I think that I would first try moving your media to a FW800 or TB. That’s a cheap way to test.
