PP5.5 very slow on brand new iMac
Posted by Brian Car on December 19, 2012 at 4:41 amI purchased a brand new 21.5″ iMac late last year.
Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3I installed CS5.5, and found it to be pretty slow. So I got 12GB of RAM. I saw an improvement, but it’s still really slow. Premiere is the worst. When I press play, even on low-res video footage, it takes a few seconds to start playing.
The worst part: After Effects compositions. I am yet to see one play back at all. I just get the spinning wheel of death whenever I try to play one.
I have finally had enough of this. Any suggestions? Thanks!

December 19, 2012 at 7:26 amWhat footage are you working with and how fast is your storage? Also you can’t really play back footage in AE, use the numpad+0 for a RAM preview.
We have the 27″ top of the line iMac from last year with a Pegasus RAID and I can easily edit native 4K R3D with 1/2 quality.

December 19, 2012 at 8:27 amYeah your issue is due to:
1. you have to add the graphic card manually to PP meaning you are probably not using the mercury playback engine.
2. did you set the ram preference?
3. you might need a fast scratch disk not the startup disk.all basic crap you have to do with any editing software….

December 19, 2012 at 12:41 pmAny particular reason you’re not stepping up to 6? The jump in performance, especially on newer machines, is quite good.

December 19, 2012 at 3:05 pmI was referring to AE comps imported into After Effects.
The kind of footage varies depending in the project I am working on. It’s usually 720p HD, and I usually have it set to half-res for playback.

December 19, 2012 at 3:10 pmEven on my powerful HP Z820 I still find that I prefer to render the more complicated AE dynamically linked comps to get smooth playback. You can do that in PrP, but its faster to export a movies from AE since its renders faster then AE. Be sure you check “Project Link”. If you need to make changes to it in PrP, just right click and select “Edit Original” to reopen AE.

December 19, 2012 at 3:11 pmInteresting. How do I manually set a graphics card?
If you mean “Preferences > Memory,” 9GB are reserved for PP6, and 3GB for other applications.
Thank you so much!

Thanks for the post!

December 22, 2012 at 3:03 pmBrian, if you plan to edit HD material, your really need a PCIE or USB 3 external raid in order for PrP to function .
Media should not be on internal or firewire drives for best performance.
