Hmm, my workfow is as follows due to cost. I import all footage to a G-Safe then edit and save the projects on it so I always have a backup of everything. I use RAID 1 which is fast enough for at least 3 streams of HD in real time. I only export what file type I need at the moment so I don’t waste drive space. I never delete any footage and it is always available either in the project or just reading it from the drive. Is this a bad idea? Not sure why I would want a large master file if I can just export from the timeline to a different format or codec if needed in the future.

Hard disks have been known to crash 😀 Someday you may need to remove those files from your raid.Im just sharing with you the work flow that most all professional editors do. Its totally your choice whether to do it or not.

You want a master since its a lot faster to make an h.264 from your master then from your time line in most case. If your drives or system dies you could still get your client a copy. Your situation may vary enough from my experience in video production facilities to warrant not making a master, but I think its a very unwise thing to do.

Tom, thanks for your input. I will give it careful consideration. I am just a “one man band” but keep fairly busy. Are you going to NAB this year? I will be at the Adobe display waiting impatiently for PP 6.0 to be introduced!

Ron, you don’t have to consider anything…just make a Mater HD file for every project. If it does not make sense now it will later, especially when you have to transcode to other formats or a project file becomes corrupt. That is all.

Hey, why not do a test? Render out the Master, then transcode a few different formats/frame sizes from Media Encoder. Then export form the Premiere timeline the same codecs, one by one, and clock the differences.

    I await the outcome.

Also, mess with the filename of the last project file that you did( make sure it is for a paying client) until it is corrupt(change it to .jpg, then .mpeg, then .flac whatever). Then see how fast you can recreate the project and output delivery. Or just transcode the Master file that you now have incorporated into your workflow to the clients format. See which one is quicker and saves your backside!

Gee Eric, I guess you were right when you commented about a lack of tact 😀

OK, it took exactly 20 minutes to export a SD DVD file from a 1280X720/60 timeline with a two camera multicam shoot. I did a 1 pass highest quality setup for the 1 hour 20 min show.

And about 45 minutes for a H.264 HD Youtube file export.

Again this was with a Dell M6600 i7 2820Q, 16 gig RAM, and NVIDIA 3000M card.
