  • PP CS4 – Can’t change default still duration

    Hi,

I’m trying to create sequences using “Automate to Sequence” with multiple groups of still jpgs in the project panel. I’ve changed the default still duration under Preferences to 30 frames to give me a 1 second duration per jpg.
When I drag the jpgs onto the timeline, they all have a duration of 5 seconds with no transition.
I’ve tried importing the jpgs using Import, but I’d like to have access to the individual jpgs in the timeline, rather than all combined into one clip.
I’ve tried changing the default still duration, restarting the program, checking the default duration (still at 30 frames) and dragging the jpgs in, but still the duration is 5 seconds.
    I’m running PP CS4 V4.2.1 on a 64bit Windows 7 machine.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Restart Windows. Set duration of the stills to you liking and reimport the stills or make a new project, see if that helps.

Thanks Ann. Restarting Windows didn’t help, but starting a new project did. I tried importing the badly behaving project into the new project, but the same problem (can’t change the default duration) happens again. Delete the project, and the new project is ok again.
So I guess I have to rebuild the project. I’m not too far into it, just been loading the assets.

    Thanks again for your help.

Now I’m finding that I can only change the default still duration one time in any project. Once I drag in a group of stills and they are placed on the timeline at the default duration, I can’t go back and change the default duration and import a new group of stills at the new default.
Is this normal PP CS4 behavior?

Once you have imported stills the rules that were set upon import (preferences duration setting) they are locked into that duration. It’s not a problem so much as it’s the restraints of the rules set in preferences.

But there is a workflow that can help you with your current situation, no need to start again.

If you can all your stills in a timeline then select them all (or as many as you can, with the intention of repeating these steps upon the next group selection).

    1. Select all the stills clips that you want to change their duration.
(Holding shift with allow you to add to a selection).
    2. Right click on one of the selected clips (or hit shortcut Ctl+r/Cmd+r on Mac) to open the Speed/Duration… option
    3. Set New Duration and then check the tick box for “Ripple Edit, Shifting Trailing Clips”
    4. Hit OK and the new duration will be set for all the clips affected and they will all ripple edit so no gaps are created and each clip is in the timeline for the duration with a new total duration to reflect the new duration of each clip.

    Jon,

Thanks for your clear and quick response.
