Hi I would like to find out what is the difference between PowerBook G4 and MacBook Pro?

I would like to setup a laptop as a portable video editing system and use Final Cut Studio as the editing package. I work as a freelance video editor for the national broadcaster here in SOuth Africa and AS of 2008 the SABC [National Broadcaster] will be using Final Cut Studio.

    Would a PowerBook G4 Do?

I’ve been working for the last seven months with FCE HD and a PowerBook G4 12-inch.

Aside from some issues that appear to have been addressed with Spotlight privacy selections and an upgrade to version 3.5, I am very pleased with the hardware.

The only lingering concern is the lack of a second Firewire port on my G4, and the lack of an ExpressCard/34 slot on SOME PowerBook G4s – including mine.

Without a second Firewire port, you must use a Firewire hub when utilizing tape playback through a Firewire cable AND when utilizing an external Firewire drive with which to capture the video from the tape. But the hub’s performance in this situation is NOT guaranteed.

In lieu of this, some G4s (not all) were manufactured with an ExpressCard slot, which allows a second Firewire bus to be added to the PowerBook, thus, allowing two devices to be connected simultaneously without the use of a hub.

The MacBook Pro features two Firewire ports AND and ExpressCard slot.

    Good luck!
